Question 2 (d)

Burst Homeware should use appendix 5 of the British health and safety executives document
L26 during their display screen equipment (DSE) throughout their working day for the Following
Reason:

This Guidance document give detailed and comprehensive guidance about work with display
equipment and describe how to comply with Health and safety of DSE regulation , it cover both
office work and other environments where DSE may be used in burst homeware office

Burst homeware may encounter both the natural risk associated with DSE and some potential of
increased risk arise from social isolation , stress , lack of supervision , lack of employee
commitment and difficulties in undertaking risk assessment , the guidance provide some easy
step to reduce these risk by conducting risk assessment and take appropriate steps to ensure
they are comfortable and can minimize the risk while carrying out DSE work

this guidance provide health and safety training for such worker when they are using working
station to avoid possible health risk associated with DSE such as musculoskeletal problems ,
visual fatigue and mental stress and communicate the appropriate precaution are taken in order
to reduce ill health which result from poor equipment or furniture , working environment , job
design and posture and inappropriate working method

The guidance provide information by user and existing condition of their workstation provide
feeling of ownership , all burst homeware worker are actively involved in the risk assessment
and report back the problem they faced , this can be obtained by ergonomic checklist and
particular risk will be identified for further action , for example if DSE associated with faulty
component in design and use suitable checklist should be made afterward and how valid and
reliable conclusion to identify step to reduce the risks by communicate the findings

The standard aim to enhance performance as well as health and safety by using ergonomic
specification for use of DSE contained various international and British standard ,which
compliance with relevant parts of these standard is not legal requirement but also go beyond the
requirement of DSE regulation , for example typical application of DSE recommended by
regulation for the following issue
- Posture problem / simple adjustment to the work station such as adjust of chair, correct
hand position and foot rest
- Visual problem; reposition of screen, using blind to avoid glare, suitable viewing distance,
appropriate workplace lighting
- Fatigue and stress by good designing of task and provide personal control over the task
and break

Burst Homeware should use this guidance because set out the minimum requirement of
workstation, this requirement comply with achieving health, safety and welfare of persons at
work with respect to the workstation
this requirement described as following
- General requirement: ensure that will not pose any risk to operator and users
- Display to avoid visual stress : ensure adequate size and adequate spacing of screen ,
the screen shall be free of reflective glare and reflection cause discomfort of the operator
eyes , illuminate screen flicker for all users , adjustment option allow screen to be tilted
to avoid glare and reflection and enable worker to maintain natural and relaxed posture ,
screen shall be manufactured without highly reflective surface finishes build in anti-glare
and non-reflective coating
keep the screen clean increase user comfort
- Keyboard to avoid ill health associated with upper limb disorder shall be separated from
screen so it will allow operator to find comfortable working position in order to avoid
fatigue in arms and hands
- Work desk and work surface shall be arranged to provide flexible space of position
screen, keyboard and document m there shall be adequate space for operator and user
to find comfortable position always
- Work chair : describe that chair shall be stable and allow operator and user easy freedom
movement and comfortable posture , the seat shall be adjustable in height in order to
avoid ergonomic issues , seat back shall be made available to any users , foot rest may
be necessary wherever individual worker are unable to rest their food flat in the floor

Burst homeware shall use this guidance because it described the main hazard of DSE work
such as example musculoskeletal disorder (upper limb disorder or back pain and physical and
psychological symptoms and factor contribution toward ill health and drawing map of principle
successful prevention strategy

The guidance can be used to advise the burst Homeware to plan the activities of user at work
on DSE by taking periodic breaks and change of activity in order to reduce the
workload of the equipment such as burst homeware activity involve daily use of keyboard and
mouse whenever the work demand continuously , the use of arm and hand should be avoided
during the breaks and always allow worker to use different posture to gain maximum benefit of
the break

Question 2 (e)
Based on scenario ONLY, there are many different environmental issue are likely to be
associated with DSE on burst homeware office , identified as per following

Firstly, the layout of the office , since the burst homeware operate their business through
office workstation style as hot desking , Even when it is possible to control the work environment
within strict limits, individuals working in that environment will vary in their judgement of its
acceptability. This is partly because of the range of personal preferences and partly because
different tasks may require quite different environments.
Display screen equipment work can often restrict the opportunities that individuals have for
moving about in the office and the degree of individual control over their own environment
should be as high as possible including the ability to temporarily vary the workstation while they
are at it.
The location of the equipment should be arranged on the work surfaces so that the most
frequently used items are in convenient positions.
When designing the layout, you have to use your rational judgement and keep in mind that the
design should contribute to the ease of use of the display screen equipment by allowing the
users to:
-read the screen and documents without excessive head movements or visual fatigue
-operate controls accurately and without discomfort
-adopt an unrestricted posture.

Based on scenario Although there are adequate number of windows of burst homeware office
but some of window restrictors have been fitted for safety reason, some window with blind
Thus, reduce the lighting level especially general lighting, some of window always kept close
especially south facing side of the building due to bird problem
Local lighting is very essential and if it is expected poor lighting inside the office, this will
increase the chance of screen glare discomfort and affect visual conditions od user at adjacent
workstation
Lighting should be under control of person for whom provided because some people based on
scenario need window to be opened and other needed closed due to the bird problem

Noise from equipment such as printer should be kept to level which do not impair concentration
or prevent normal conversation, distracting noise from printer should be considered when
locating the equipment in proper way at the office, also loud speech
Communication often occurs in noisy environment, referring to (supporting document 2) , the
Display shown large number of called answered in 20 second with different call handler at the
same time in the same shared area , the presence of noisy environment in the office and loud
background where people talk mush louder
Loud sound and prolonged and intermittent exposure to certain noise trigger physiologic stress
and fatigue in human body

In the same context the Desk space requirements in burst home office due to space limits is
insufficient leg room underneath the work surfaces. The space should allow unobstructed leg
room for taller DSE users and permit easy access for all DSE users. This will allow users to vary
their posture whilst sitting at the workstation and reduce their risk of muscle fatigue
The effect of Heating based on scenario that desk top fan and portable electric heaters and few
fan heater the combination of these can lead to dry air and increased the heat Electronic
equipment can be a source of dry heat which can impact upon the thermal
environment at the workstation and can cause discomfort and problems such as sore throats
and eyes and dry skin.

Therefore, the ventilation is inadequate because due to bird dropping covering most of the
windowsills. Workers are saying they do not want to open the windows anymore. This is
obstructing the main source of ventilation, it should be comfortable and be maintained at a level
which prevents discomfort and the problems of sore throats, eyes and dry skin

In addition to the same issue the humidity also is not proper because the air conditioning units in
the ceiling are not reliable and create localised problems may be due to bird nesting ,it is better
to ensure office environment to be an effective way of improving humidity levels by ensure
routine maintenance of AC

Although the Size and finish and edges of the work surfaces should be determined by the
requirements of the whole task. As well as accommodating DSE equipment, many workstations
have to provide space for other items as shown on scenario such as, filling document and,
cupboard and display . The surface area available should permit a flexible arrangement of all
the components to be accommodated
The finish of the work surface should be made to minimise reflections from overhead or task
lighting. And also, the work surface and supporting framework should be free from sharp
corners and edges.

Access is important environmental issue, the width of the access ways and the space behind
chairs should not restrict this.
Lastly the effect of Glare and Reflection , Glare is a condition of vision in which there is
discomfort or reduction in the ability to see significant objects on the screen, since the call
handler are using the DSE screen for 10 hours with inadequate level of natural lighting due to
windows closed and may be poor illumination was expected on the office
Glare can place a strain on the user’s eyes as the user’s eyes have to work harder to negotiate
the glare to see the characters on the screen. Therefore, it is important to reduce glare hence
Workstations shall be designed with adequate sources of lighting such as windows and other
openings, transparent or translucid walls, and brightly coloured fixtures or walls cause no direct
glare and no distracting reflections on the screen.
In the other hand Radiation from display screen equipment is very low and is well below the
maximum exposure limits and therefore does not pose a significant risk to health. Therefore, no
special protective measures are needed to protect the health of people from this radiation. LCD
flat-panel screens do not emit any electromagnetic radiation, except visible light, so All radiation
shall be reduced to negligible levels from the point of view of the protection of operators’ or
users’ health and safety.
