OF ANIMAL SCIENCE
Module Overview:
This module will introduce students to the various aspects of animal science,
through an exploration of the animal industries, the roles that animals serve in
society, and how cultural background (indigenous and non-indigenous) may
influence the interactions that occur between humans, animals, and their
environment. Students will also begin to develop skills in scientific
communication, critical thinking and inquiry in the context of animal science.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, the students should be able to:
1. Identify animal husbandry terminologies;
2. Relate the role of man and animals to its ecosystem;
3. Ascertain the Animal Science Industry in the Philippines;
4. Classify the Poultry and Livestock resources in the Country
5. Identify the problems and issues in the animal industry; and
6. Establish solutions to the problems of the Animal Industry in the Philippines.

What is ANIMAL SCIENCE?
•A diverse and fascinating blend of applied and basic life sciences, ultimately
focused on enhancing the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of the
domestic animal industries.
-The science, art and industry of housing, breeding, feeding, managing and
marketing domesticated animals in order to earn profit.

Domestication of animals began over 15,000 years ago with the domestication of
the dog. The dog offered man companionship and protection, while man offered
the dog food and protection. Domestication of any species takes many
generations and over time the dog became a faithful companion. The
domestication of livestock began around 10,000 years ago in southwest Asia with
the domestication of goats, sheep and pigs. Early domestication involved
