Module 1. AS 111

This module provides an overview of animal science. It will introduce students to aspects of the animal industry including animal husbandry terms, the relationship between humans/animals and the ecosystem, and the livestock and poultry resources in the Philippines. Students will learn about the history of animal domestication and develop skills in scientific communication and critical thinking. They will also study the current problems facing the animal industry in the Philippines and solutions to those problems.

MODULE 1-OVERVIEW

OF ANIMAL SCIENCE
Module Overview:
This module will introduce students to the various aspects of animal science,
through an exploration of the animal industries, the roles that animals serve in
society, and how cultural background (indigenous and non-indigenous) may
influence the interactions that occur between humans, animals, and their
environment. Students will also begin to develop skills in scientific
communication, critical thinking and inquiry in the context of animal science.
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, the students should be able to:
1. Identify animal husbandry terminologies;
2. Relate the role of man and animals to its ecosystem;
3. Ascertain the Animal Science Industry in the Philippines;
4. Classify the Poultry and Livestock resources in the Country
5. Identify the problems and issues in the animal industry; and
6. Establish solutions to the problems of the Animal Industry in the Philippines.

What is ANIMAL SCIENCE?
•A diverse and fascinating blend of applied and basic life sciences, ultimately
focused on enhancing the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of the
domestic animal industries.
-The science, art and industry of housing, breeding, feeding, managing and
marketing domesticated animals in order to earn profit.
Learning contents
Domestication of animals began over 15,000 years ago with the domestication of
the dog. The dog offered man companionship and protection, while man offered
the dog food and protection. Domestication of any species takes many
generations and over time the dog became a faithful companion. The
domestication of livestock began around 10,000 years ago in southwest Asia with
the domestication of goats, sheep and pigs. Early domestication involved
restricting the foraging area of the animals to make

Learning contents
Livestock are domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to
produce commodities such as food, fiber, and labor: which are
generally raised for profit. As the saying goes “NO MAN IS AN ISLAND”
One can’t live without help from another, humans are no exception to
this rule because we depend on other organisms for our source of food
and energy.
So we must keep in mind that we must value other’s lives as we value
our own. In animal science, the challenge to all of us is to be able to
meet our local need for food and other essential products from
animals in a most economical and efficient systems of production
without endangering our environment.

Poultry can be defined as domestic fowls, including chickens, turkeys,

geese, and ducks, raised for the production of meat or eggs, and the word
is also used for the flesh of these birds used as food.

Urbanization is a population shift from rural to urban areas, "the gradual

increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas", and the ways in
which each society adapts to the change

Problems/Issues to be address
Animal production in the Philippines is characterized by a
mix or mosaic of smallholder, semi-intensive, and large-
scale livestock enterprises in peri-urban areas. With
increasing urbanization, there is also a scaling up of broiler
and swine production to meet food demand from the
increasing human population that are moving towards
urban centers

Problems/Issues to be address
Social conflicts have arisen over the location of large-scale livestock
production close to residential centers.

Zoning regulations, intended to promote the relocation of livestock

enterprises to remoter, more sparsely inhabited areas have been generally
ineffective. It is particularly difficult for smallholders to comply with such
regulations, and consequently, they are widely ignored. The net result has
been that small to medium scale production facilities are often located near
human settlement, with obvious adverse consequence for animal and human
health, hygiene, food safety, animal welfare and the environment.
