TRE2601 Major Test 2

This document is a test for a Transportation Engineering course at the University of South Africa. It consists of two questions worth a total of 50 marks. Question 1 involves calculating properties of a culvert needed to convey runoff under a road, including pipe size, invert elevations, flow regime, and tailwater elevation. It also asks about manual traffic counting methods. Question 2 involves calculations for a vertical curve on a rural highway, including minimum curve length, beginning/end of curve locations, lowest point, and an elevation at a given chainage. Formulas and blank working sheets are provided in an annexure.

Question 1

A 50 m long culvert of entrance type 1 is needed to move rainwater transported from

upstream catchment and convey it under the road embankment. The culvert is laid at

a slope of 3,5%; Ke is 0.5.

Assume the runoff is 4,5 m3/s and the headwater depth:diameter ratio is 1.

1.1 Calculate the size of the pipe that will be needed. (4)
1.2 Calculate the invert elevation at the inlet, assuming the water elevation at the inlet end
is 100 m? (2)
1.3 Determine whether the chosen culvert is operating under inlet control or outlet
control? (10)
1.4 Calculate the tailwater elevation. (4)

1.5 The Joburg Roads Agency is planning to rehabilitate Pioneer Avenue located in
Florida Park, the length of the road is 0.49km. Prior to compiling design drawings
volume surveys are required for the road and for this, the manual count method has
been selected. Briefly describe the manual count method in terms of the following
aspects:
1.5.1 How the method is carried out? (3)
1.5.2 Period of counting. (2)
1.5.3 Areas and circumstances in which the method is used. (3)
1.5.4 Advantages of the method. (1)

Diagram depicting a typical survey of an intersection, using the method. (2)

QUESTION 2

A vertical curve along the centreline of a rural highway joins a - 4.5% grade to a + 3.5 %
grade. The point of vertical intersection (PVI) is at chainage 1 0+550 and at elevation
900 m above mean sea level. The design speed of the highway is 115 km/h, determine
the following:

2.1. Determine the minimum length of curve based on the vertical rate of curvature. (5)

2.2. The chainage and elevation of the Beginning and end of the curve BVC and EVC,
respectively. (5)

2.3. The chainage and elevation of the lowest point on the curve. (6)

2.4. The elevation of chainage 1 0+350 (3)
