Fabrication process

1. In fabrication process, product is made from raw materials and not from ready-
made components. Joining process
2. It is a secondary manufacturing process
3. Welding – complex fabrication process are done like fabrication of nuclear reactors,
riveting and pressing are included in fabrication process
4. Conventional welding process are =
a. Gas welding – oxy acetylene welding and oxy hydrogen
b. Resistance welding – spot welding and seam welding
5. Recent welding process = frictional welding, laser beam, ultrasonic welding

6. Joining process: Adhesive bonding, brazing and soldering


7. Permanent joining process: welding and soldering process
8. Temporary joining process: mechanical joining- material is wasted in this process,
which is in the form of chips.

Hand tools and machine tools


1. Machine tools – lathe, milling, drilling
2. Mass production of small parts – automatic screw cutting – it has higher accuracy
3. Lathe – machine for producing a cylindrical machine – father of machine tool
a. Type- capstan lathe and turret lathe – used for the production of duplicate
parts
b. Centre lathe – knurling
c. Capacity of lathe is expressed as – swing and distance between center
d. Cutting tool can never have its – clearance angle negative
e. Horizontal fed is controlled by - Apron
4. Drilling machines – to produces the holes
a. Drilling - counter boring (operation to enlarge the hole)
5. Shaper machine -
6. Milling machines – remove the metal as the work is fed against a rotating multi
point cutter
a. Milling – slotting (producing the slots like T-shaped, plain shaped)
7. CNC machining center – perform the job of milling and drilling machine
8. CNC turning center – performs all the job of lathe
9. DNC – direct numerical control
10. Tool nomenclature – is given by 8-6-5-5-10-15-2

11. Maximum length of work piece that can be fit on a lathe machine – length between
centres
12. Universal chuck – three jaws chuck
13. Preferred holding option for odd shaped work piece = four jaw chuck
