The CPU

The CPU is the central processing unit that processes data and instructions by constantly repeating the fetch-decode-execute cycle. It follows the von Neumann architecture, with a control unit that decodes instructions and issues control signals, and an arithmetic logic unit that carries out logic and arithmetic calculations. The control unit includes a program counter that holds the memory address of the next instruction, while the arithmetic logic unit includes an accumulator that holds data being processed and results. Registers in the CPU include the memory address register that holds the memory address being used, and the memory data register that holds the actual data or instruction fetched from or waiting to be written to memory.
