3 - Knowing About Operating System Session - 1

An operating system manages all the software and hardware on a computer, allowing programs to run simultaneously and access components. There are two main types of interfaces - command line interfaces where users type commands, and interactive interfaces that allow direct interaction. Basic commands are listed for Windows and Linux command line interfaces, including navigating and managing files and folders. Graphical user interfaces display visual objects to represent actions, changing based on user input. Touch user interfaces use touch as the pointing technology.

Session -1
KNOWING ABOUT OPERATING SYSTEM

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It

manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and
hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer
without knowing how to speak the computer's language.

The operating system's job

Your computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and
hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are several different
computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your
computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage. The operating
system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets what it needs.

Types of operating systems:

1). Command Line Interface (CLI)

2). Interactive operating System Interfaces

 Command Line Interface (CLI): A command-line interface allows the user

to interact with the computer by typing in commands . The computer
displays a prompt, the user keys in the command and presses enter or
return. In the early days of personal computers, all PCs used command-line
interfaces.
Interactive operating system

An interactive operating system is one that allows the user to directly interact
with the operating system whilst one or more programs are running.

Basic Windows CLI Commands

Command Description

Dir List the directory (folder) system.

cd pathname Change directory (folder) in the file system.

cd \ Move to the root folder of the file system.

cd .. Move one level up (one folder) in the file system.

Copy Copy a file to another folder.

Move Move a file to another folder.

type filename Type a file.

mkdir or md Creates a new directory (folder).

rmdir or rd Removes a directory (folder).

Cls Clears the CLI window.

Exit Closes the CLI window.

Basic Linux CLI Commands

Command Description

Mkdir Creates a new directory (folder).

Rmdir Remove a directory (folder).

Clear Clears the CLI window.

Exit Closes the CLI window.

man command Shows the manual for a given command.

I. GUI (graphical user interface): A GUI (graphical user interface) is a system

of interactive visual components for computer software. A GUI displays
objects that convey information, and represent actions that can be taken
by the user. The objects change color, size, or visibility when the user
interacts with them.
The GUI was first developed at Xerox PARC by Alan Kay, Douglas Engelbart, and a
group of other researchers in 1981. Later, Apple introduced the Lisa
computer with a GUI on January 19, 1983.

II. A touch user interface (TUI) is a computer-pointing technology based upon the sense of
touch
