7
sky to be blue.Under the layer of yellow pigmented cells is a layer of cells that contain tiny
particles much smaller than any of the wavelengths in visible light. When light having a
mixture of colours strikes these cells, the bluer part of light is spread over a wide range of
directions while the red part is hardly scattered at all and mostly continues in its original

38 Metal oxides are basic in nature but some metal oxides such as aluminium oxide, zinc oxide 4
etc. show both acidic and basic behaviour. Such metal oxides react with both acids and

Some of the metal oxides are soluble in water and known as alkalis.
Answer the following questions on the basis of given paragraph
i) Show the amphoteric behavoiur of zinc oxide with the help of chemical equations.
ii) Give two examples of alkali.
iii) Write the chemical equation of aluminium oxide with sulphuric acid.

39 We need energy to perform various activities. This energy is derived from the catabolism 4
of various components of food, e.g., proteins, carbohydrates, fats, etc. Oxygen is required
for catabolic processes and carbon dioxide is released in the process. So, the body requires
a continuous exchange of gases, oxygen from the atmosphere is taken inside and carbon
dioxide produced is given out. In human beings, respiratory pigment called haemoglobin
present in RBCs has very high affinity for oxygen. In tissues, exchange of gases occurs
between oxygenated blood and tissue cells. Carbon di oxide is more soluble in water than
oxygen hence it is transported in dissolved form in our blood.
a) How is oxygen and carbon dioxide transported in human body? Explain.
b) What do you understand by the term residual volume?
c) What are the consequences of deficiency of haemoglobin in blood?
