General Instructions:
• The question paper comprises four sections A, B, C and D. There are 20 questions in the
question paper. All questions are compulsory.
• Section–A - question no. 1 to 14 - all questions and parts thereof are of one mark each. These
questions contain multiple choice questions (MCQs), very short answer questions, assertion
- reason type questions and case-based questions. Answers to these should be given in one
word or one sentence.
• Section–B - question no. 15 to 16 are short answer type questions, carrying 2 marks each.
Answers to these questions should in the range of 30 to 50 words.
• Section–C - question no. 17 to 18 are short answer type questions, carrying 3 marks each.
Answers to these questions should in the range of 50 to 80 words.
• Section–D – question no. 19 to 20 are long answer type questions carrying 5 marks
each. Answer to these questions should be in the range of 80 to 120 words.
• There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions.
A student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.
• Wherever necessary, neat and properly labeled diagrams should be drawn.

14. The salt pans in Marakkanam, a port town about 120 km from Chennai are the 4
third largest producer of salt in Tamil Nadu. Separation of salt from water is a
laborious process and the salt obtained is used as raw materials for
manufacture of various sodium compounds. One such compound is Sodium
hydrogen carbonate, used in baking, as an antacid and in soda acid fire
extinguishers. The table shows the mass of various compounds obtained when
1litre of sea water is evaporated.
