Grades of Reinforcing Steel

The document discusses different grades of reinforcing steel bars based on their yield strength. It describes ASTM standards for different types of bars including ASTM A615 for billet steel bars, ASTM A706 for low-alloy bars, and ASTM A996 for rail or axle steel bars. It also summarizes key aspects of the metric version of ACI 318 including corresponding bar sizes and steel grades, as well as conversions between customary and metric units for concrete strengths and steel yield strengths.

OVERVIEW OF
REINFORCING BARS
Reinforcing bars may be rolled from
billet steel, axle steel, or rail steel.
Occasionally, they are rolled from
old train rails or locomotive axles,
but these steels have lower ductility
due to prolonged cold-working.
ASTM-designated reinforcing bars
are available in various types.
Grades include Grade 50 (yield point
of 50,000 psi), Grade 60 (60,000 psi),
and so forth.
ASTM A615
Includes deformed and plain
billet steel bars, marked with the
letter S for the type of steel.
Widely used in the United States,
these bars have four minimum
yield strength levels: 40,000 psi
(280 MPa), 60,000 psi (420 MPa),
75,000 psi (520 MPa), and 80,000
Construction of a High-Rise
psi (550 MPa).
Residential Building
ASTM A706
Encompasses low-alloy deformed
and plain bars, marked with the
letter W for the type of steel.
Intended for applications requiring
controlled tensile properties and
specialized chemical composition
for welding purposes.
Available in two grades: Grade 60
Seismic Retrofit of an (420 MPa) and Grade 80 (550 MPa).
Existing Building
ASTM A996
Covers deformed rail steel
or axle steel bars, identified
by the letter R for the type
of steel.

The North-South railway

project (NSRP)
When deformed bars
meet both A615 and A706
specifications, they are
marked with both letters
S and W.

ACI CODE 318M-11
IN METRIC UNITS
Utilizes reinforcing bars identical to those in
U.S. customary units.
Metric bar dimensions are soft conversions,
nearly equivalent to customary sizes.
SI MATERIAL
STRENGTHS
Conversion of concrete strengths (f_c)
and steel yield strengths (f_y) from
customary to metric units.

1. The bar sizes in the metric version
correspond to U.S. sizes #3 through #18
bars, numbered 10 through 57.

Metric #10 bar: 9.5mm diameter

Metric #13 bar: 12.7 mm diameter
Detailed info in Appendix B, Tables
B.2 and B.3.
2. Steel reinforcing grades in the metric version:
300, 350, 420, and 520 MPa.
Corresponding approximately to
Grade 40, 50, 60, and 75 bars.
Appendix B, Table B.3 provides ASTM
numbers, steel grades, and available
bar sizes for each grade.
3. Concrete strengths in metric units: 17, 21, 24,
28, 35, and 42 MPa.
Corresponding to 2466, 3046, 3481,
4061, 5076, and 6092 psi.
Represents 2500-, 3000-, 3500-,
4000-, 5000-, and 6000-psi
concretes.
