Activity #1: SOME COMMON LABORATORY TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Objectives:
a. To be able to identify and determine the use of some (15) laboratory tools and equipment in
Organic Chemistry.

Name Description /Use Drawing or Picture

A common type of glassware used in

laboratories to prepare and store samples
Beaker and solutions. A beaker is a cylindrical
container with an open top and a flat
bottom.
(Heney, 2022)

A tool used in laboratories for a variety of

purposes, including sterilizing, heating, and
experimenting. By combining gas and air, it
creates a controlled flame with adjustable
Bunsen Burner height and intensity. It is commonly used in
chemical and biology labs to heat liquids or
conduct experiments that require
regulated heat.
(Bhakta, 2023)

A cone-shaped laboratory glassware with a

thin neck and a wide base, perfect for
Erlenmeyer Flask stirring solutions without spilling. It is built
to last and can endure extreme
temperatures. It is great for mixing
chemical solutions because of its durable
structure, which allows for efficient heat
transfer and liquid blending.
(Certified MTP, 2023)
A conical or cylindrical structure with a
narrow stem for accurate liquid or powder
distribution into containers. The
Funnel importance of funnels in laboratories
stems from their adaptability to various
filtration and separation procedures,
making them critical devices for
researchers and scientists working in the
laboratory environment.
(Fisher Scientific, n.d.)

A cylindrical container having volume

marks across the length of it, allowing for
precise liquid volume measurements. Its
function is to precisely measure and
dispense liquids in laboratories. The
Graduated Cylinder graduated markings allow scientists,
researchers, and students to read the
volume of a liquid at eye level, resulting in
exact measurements for experiments and
analysis in a variety of scientific fields,
including chemistry and biology.
(Treptow, 1998)

A simple optical instrument used to slightly

enlarge details in objects. One of the uses
for a magnifying lens in the lab is to inspect
Magnifying Glass specimens closely. A closer look with a
magnifying glass can show minute details
that would otherwise go unseen, whether
you're looking at a geological sample or a
microscopic organism through a
microscope.
(Westlab, 2023)

A tool used to magnify small objects. Some

microscopes can even examine an object at
Microscope the cellular level, allowing scientists to see
a cell's morphology, nucleus,
mitochondria, and other organelles.
(National Geographics, n.d.)
A transparent, circular, and shallow
container with a cover used in laboratories
to grow and observe microorganisms or
Petri Dish cells. These are often made of glass or
plastic and are intended to be transparent
to allow easy viewing of the contents. In
chemistry labs, petri dishes are used for
crystallization studies and to observe
chemical processes in a controlled
environment.
(Science Equip, 2021)

In a chemistry laboratory, a retort is a

glassware instrument used for dry
distillation of compounds. It consists of a
spherical vessel with a long, downward-
Retort pointing neck. The liquid to be distilled is
introduced into the vessel and heated. The
neck functions as a condenser, allowing
evaporated vapors to condense and flow
along it to a collection jar located beneath.
(ChemEurope, n.d.)

An open-topped, transparent glass or

plastic container that is much longer than
it is wide and usually has a U-shaped
bottom. Chemical experiments are
Test Tube conducted in test tubes, where they are
combined and heated. When people want
to culture (produce) microorganisms, they
provide habitats for such creatures.
(Heger AS, n.d.)

A test tube holder is a wooden and metal

device used in laboratories. It can hold a
test tube while it is heated. The test tube is
Test Tube Holder held in place by a U-shaped piece of wire
with loops on both ends that can be
pressed together. Rubber or plastic
coatings could be applied to the loops to
increase traction and protect the test tube
from scratches.
(Medilab, 2024)
In the laboratory, a thermometer is used to
properly measure temperature. It enables
scientists and researchers to monitor
temperature changes throughout
experiments, ensuring exact control over
reaction conditions. These are essential in
Thermometer many scientific areas, including chemistry,
biology, and physics, where temperature is
key for interpreting and controlling
experimental parameters. They are
classified into several forms, including
mercury and digital thermometers, each
with a unique application in laboratory
situations.
(D.C. Crawford, 2009)

These are huge pincers designed to grasp

and raise heat-resistant vessels used in
high-temperature chemical operations.
Tongs Tongs vary in shape and are intended to
pick up laboratory goods such as hot
evaporating dishes, beakers, crucibles, and
other laboratory apparatuses.
(Fisher Scientific, n.d.)

It is used in science classrooms to measure

the mass of small objects weighing no
more than 610 grams; used to calculate the
mass of a body under the force of gravity.
Triple Beam Balance Counter masses are used to balance both
sides of the balance and indicate the
object's mass. The balance contains several
components that aid in estimating the
mass of an object.
(Gossett-Webb, 2023)

The volumetric flask is a type of glassware

commonly used in laboratories for solution
production. A volumetric flask is a bulb
with a flat bottom and an elongated neck
Volumetric Flask that has been calibrated to hold a specified
volume at a point on the neck. The flask is
also known as a graduated flask or a
measuring flask since its mark indicates a
precise volume measurement.
(Helmenstine, 2018)
Generalization:

Laboratory provide students with a variety of learning and experimentation opportunities, which is
critical for their continued intellectual development in academic subjects that require these activities. Science
laboratories provide students with the time, space, and resources they need to investigate and conduct
experiments with lab equipment. Maintenance and routine inspection of laboratory apparatus are also
important components of this activity, as is proper use of laboratory equipment when working with hazardous
chemicals. Furthermore, because many lab mishaps can be attributed to improper use or maintenance of
laboratory equipment, it is critical for us as students to remember how to operate various pieces of
equipment.

Overall, the most important requirement for students to successfully complete various lab tasks is
the appropriate use of laboratory equipment.
