Common Lab Apparatuses

Common Laboratory Equipment and Their Uses

1. Beaker – A cylindrical container with a flat bottom, used to hold, mix, and heat
liquids. It is commonly used for stirring, dissolving substances, and conducting
reactions in laboratories.

2. Graduated Cylinder – A tall, narrow container with measurement markings used

to measure liquid volume accurately. It is essential for precise liquid measurements
in experiments.

3. Erlenmeyer Flask – A conical flask with a narrow neck,

used to hold and mix liquids while minimizing spills. Its shape allows easy swirling without
risk of spilling, making it ideal for titrations and reactions.

4. Test Tube – A small cylindrical glass tube used to hold small amounts of liquids
for experiments. It is commonly used in chemical reactions, heating small
samples, and observing changes in substances.

5. Test Tube tong – A clamp-like tool used to hold test tubes, especially when heating
them over a flame. It ensures safety by preventing direct hand contact with hot test tubes.

6. Test Tube Rack – A stand that holds multiple test tubes upright. It provides
stability, organization, and prevents test tubes from tipping over during experiments.

7. Bunsen Burner – A laboratory gas burner that produces a controlled flame for heating
substances. It is commonly used for sterilization, combustion, and heating chemical reactions.

8. Pipette – A tool used to transfer small amounts of liquid. A pipette provides precise
volume measurement and transfer.
9. Funnel – A device with a wide mouth and narrow stem, used for pouring liquids into
containers without spilling. It is essential in filtration and transferring liquids safely.

10. Wire Gauze – A metal mesh placed on a ring stand to

support glassware while heating. It helps distribute heat evenly and prevents direct
flame contact with glass containers.

11. Mortar and Pestle – A set of a bowl (mortar) and a grinding tool (pestle) used to
crush and grind solids into powders. It is commonly used for preparing samples in
laboratories.

12. Watch Glass – A small, round piece of glass used to hold small samples,
evaporate liquids, or cover beakers. It prevents contamination while allowing
observation.

13. Crucible – A small ceramic or metal container used for heating substances to
very high temperatures. It is used in melting metals, burning chemicals, and
conducting high-temperature reactions.

14. Thermometer – A device used to measure temperature. It is essential for

monitoring reaction temperatures, environmental conditions, and liquid heating

15. Balance/Weighing Scale – A measuring instrument used to determine the mass of substances accurately.
It is used in preparing precise quantities of chemicals for experiments.

16. Stirring Rod – A long glass rod used to mix liquids in beakers or flasks. It helps ensure
even mixing of solutions and prevents spillage during liquid transfer.

17. Hot Plate – A flat-surfaced electric heating device used to heat substances without
an open flame. It is commonly used for controlled heating of liquids and solutions.
18. Volumetric Flask – A flask with a precise volume marking, used to measure and
prepare accurate liquid volumes. It is essential in preparing standard solutions in
chemistry.

19. Burette – A long, graduated glass tube with a stopcock used to dispense precise amounts of
liquid, mainly in titrations. It ensures accurate chemical measurements.

20. Alcohol Lamp – A small lamp that produces a flame using alcohol as fuel, used for
heating substances in the laboratory. It is an alternative heat source to Bunsen burners
when gas is unavailable.
