Copy the format below on a clean long bond paper (you may alter the spacing based
on your
answer). Fill in the blanks in the following table with the name of the laboratory
apparatus (from
the list above), description, and use or function. Bring this to the next class meeting.
In the
laboratory, you will now identify the name of the apparatus that you drew.

ACTIVITY 1
2. Name-Erlenmeyer flask
Description-An Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask (British English) or a
titration flask, is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom.
Function-holding, mixing, measuring, heating, and boiling chemicals, chemical
reactions, and phase changes.
3. Name-Florence flask
Description-A Florence flask (also known as a boiling flask) is a type of flask used
as
an item of laboratory glassware. It can be used as a container to hold solutions of
chemicals. A Florence flask has a round body with a single long neck and with either
a
round or a flat bottom.
Function- mixing, measuring & heating chemicals, samples and solutions.
4. Name-Graduated cylinders
Description-Graduated cylinders are long, slender vessels used for measuring the
volumes of liquids. They are not intended for mixing, stirring, heating, or weighing.
Graduated cylinders commonly range in size from 5 mL to 500 mL.
Function- measuring volumes (amounts) of liquids.
5. Name-Watch glass
Description-A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as
a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a
small
amount of substance, and as a cover for a beaker.
Function-to dry and weigh solid compounds and to cover containers such as TLC
developing chambers.
6. Name-funnel
Description-A funnel is a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem. It
is used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small
opening. Without a funnel, much spillage would occur. Funnels are usually made of
stainless steel, glass, or plastic.
Function-To channel liquids or fine-grained substances into containers with a small
Opening.
7. Name-Stirring rod
Description-A stirring rod is used for mixing liquids, or solids and liquids. Stir rods
are used as part of proper laboratory technique when decanting supernatants
because
the contact helps to negate the adhesion between the side of the glassware and the
supernatant that is responsible for the liquid running down the side.
Function-mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes.
8. Name-Test tube
Description-A test tube is defined as a small, long plastic cylinder with one open end
used to store, mix, or hold liquids, bodily fluids, bacteria, or chemicals. Test tube
definition is a laboratory tool with various functions in the biological and chemical
sciences.
Function-hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for
qualitative experiments and assays.
15. Name-Pestle
Description-A pestle is a tool used to crush, mash or grind materials in a mortar. In
solid state chemistry a mortar and pestle is often used to prepare reactants for a
solid state synthesis (the ceramic method). Mortars and pestles come in a variety of
shapes and sizes.
Function-to crush, mash or grind materials in a mortar
17. Name-tripod
Description-A laboratory tripod is a three-legged platform used to support flasks
and beakers. Tripods are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum and made
light-weight for efficient portability within the lab.
Function-to provide a stable and secure platform for holding various laboratory
equipment such as beakers, flasks, and test tubes during experiments.
26. Name-Thermometer
Description-A thermometer is an instrument that measures temperature. It can
measure the temperature of a solid such as food, a liquid such as water, or a gas
such
as air. The three most common units of measurement for temperature are Celsius,
Fahrenheit, and kelvin.
Function-to measure temperatures or temperature changes with a high degree of
precision.
32. Name-Pipette
Description-a device for measuring and transferring small volumes of liquid that
typically consists of a narrow glass tube into which the liquid is drawn by suction and
kept by blocking the upper end.
Function- to measure out or transfer small quantities of liquid, in volumes of
milliliters (mL), microliters (μL).
