COMPUTER NETWORKING
1ST MARCH, 2024.

What it means to me!!

“ These things are too small, I don’t see them well; she referred to English
Alphabets on Blackboard and Exercise books. Puokleena, my younger son
will come and do it, she said and given up”.

~ Nyalen Thai Long, 2002.

My mother’s gift to me.

You’re kindly, invited. 5
Classification of computer networks by scale.
Networks are communication systems designed to convey information from
the origin to a particular destination.

They can be:

➢ Local : Covers a small area and have a relatively small number of users.

➢ Global : Cover long distance and have an unlimited number of users.

Types
WHAT IS A NETWORK?
1 WHAT IS A NETWORK?

- Smallest
- Most common type of network.
- Resolves around one person.
- Mostly wireless network technologies.
2
WHAT IS A NETWORK?

❖ A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a

small geographic area, like a home, office, or group of buildings.
❖ Characteristics:
• Higher data transfer rates.
• Smaller geographic range.
• Lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines.
• Can be wireless/wired.
WHAT IS A NETWORK?
LANs can be small, linking as few as three computers, but often link hundreds of
computers used by thousands of people.

3
Wide Area Network.
❖ Group of computers and network devices connected
across large physical areas such as states or countries.
• Often connected through the telephone system,
leased lines or satellites.
• Low data rates.
➢ Drawback:
• More prone to hackers and viruses. Best-know example: Internet.
4

❖Network that interconnect users with computer

resources in a geographic area or region larger than that
covered by a local area network (LAN) but smaller than
the area covered by wide area network (WAN).

❖MAN is a network that connects two or more Local

Area Networks or Campus Area Networks together but
does not extend beyond the boundaries of the
immediate town, city, or metropolitan area.
5
Wireless
WHAT IS A NETWORK? Network.
 Uses Radio Frequency (RF)/Infrared signal technologies.

➢ Can be:
o System interconnection, e.g. use of Bluetooth
o Wireless LANs, e.g. use of Wi-fi.
o Wireless WANs, e.g. use of radio network, 4G,5G.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER NETWORK?

 Data transmission Modes in Computer Networks.

SIMPLEX MODE.

• The data is sent only in one direction.

• Only one of the two devices on a link can transmit,

the other can only receive..

• There is no mechanism for information to be

transmitted back to the sender.

• The simplex mode uses the entire capacity of the

channel to send data in one direction.

• An example of a simple mode is a Communication

between a computer and a keyboard.
❖ Half-Duplex Mode (HDX).
 Each station can transmit data in both
directions, but not at the same time.
 That means, when one is sending the
other device is receiving and vice versa.

❖ Full-Duplex Mode.(FDX).
▪ Send data at the same time in both directions
on the transmission path.
▪ This means that it is bidirectional.
BENEFITS OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

 Resource sharing.
 Data sharing.
 Cost efficiency.
 Flexibility.
 Management of data.
o Data can be in the form of text, images, numbers or characters.
