CONDITIONALS
TYPE 0: Điều kiện dựa trên sự thật hiển nhiên, chân lý.

EX: If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.


If people don’t eat or drink, they die.
If a dog sees a stranger, it barks.

TYPE 1: Điều kiện có thể xảy ra (open/likely/possible condition)

Present simple tense
Imperative form (mệnh lệnh cách)

EX: If it doesn’t rain, we will go to the beach.


If someone phones me, tell them to leave a message.

TYPE 2: Điều kiện không thật ở hiện tại (present unreal condition)

TO BE chia là WERE cho

EX: If it didn’t rain now, we would go to the beach.(e.g It is now raining outside.)
If I were you / If I were in your position is used to give an advice
EX: If I were you, I wouln’t buy that expensive bicycle.

TYPE 3: Điều kiện không thật ở quá khứ (past unreal condition)

EX: If it hadn’t rained yesterday, we would have gone to the beach.(e.g It rained heavily yesterday.)
If I had known she was ill yesterday, I would have come to visit her. (e.g You didn’t know she was ill
yesterday.)
If he had worked harder, he could have passed the exams. (e.g he didn’t work hard.)
If we had brought a map with us, we mightn’t have got lost. (e.g You didn’t bring a map with you)

UNLESS = IF …… NOT, OR, OTHERWISE : (nếu không)
Ex: 1 . If you don’t study hard, you will fail in the examination.
Unless you study hard, you will fail in the examination.
2 . If you try your best, you will get success.
Unless you try your best, you will not get success.
3 . Go out, or I’ll call the police.
If you do not go out / Unless you go out, I will call the police.
4 . Stop smoking, otherwise you will die of cancer.
If you do not stop smoking / Unless you stop smoking, you will die of cancer.
INVERSION :
Ex: 1 . If I were in your place, I wouldn’t do that.
Were I in your place, I wouldn’t do that.
2 . If he had taken her advice, he wouldn’t have failed in the exam.
Had he taken her advice, he wouldn’t have failed in the exam.
Notes : Were + S . . . = If + S + were . . .
Had + S + (not) + V3 . . . = If + S + had (not) + V3 . . .
TYPE 2 & TYPE 3 IN COMBINATION:
Ex: He didn’t have breakfast this morning, so he feels very hungry now.
If he had had breakfast this morning, he wouldn’t feel hungry now.
IF + … SHOULD: (in type 1 to indicate that the action, though possible, but not very likely _ hành động có
thể xảy ra nhưng không chắc chắn.
Ex : If you should have any difficulty in getting spare parts, ring this number.
Should you have any difficulty in getting spare parts, ring this number. ( Inversion )
