DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE THEORY

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

Compare the relative wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic waves.
(S10-FE- IIa-b47)

Objective
• Trace the development of electromagnetic wave theory.

Brief Description:
Did you send text messages to somebody today? Or have you ever cooked in
a microwave? Did you know that these previously mentioned human activities make
use of microwaves? Microwaves carry energy, and so with the other kinds of
electromagnetic waves. But what are electromagnetic waves? How can these waves
become useful to us?

Terminologies about EM Wave

Let’s Recall
Directions: Identify the terms being described in the given statements.
Choose your answers from the box and write your answer on a separate sheet
of paper.

CLUES: Electricity, Magnetism, Magnetic force, Electromagnet, Magnet

1. It is the property of being able to attract objects made of naturally

occurring magnetic substances like iron, nickel, cobalt or some of its
alloys.
2. It is the object that has the magnetic ability to attract objects made of iron
or other magnetic substance.
3. It is the product of the magnetic field, charge, and its velocity.
4. It is the magnet whose magnetic properties are produced by electric
current.
5. It is produced by vibrating or flowing charges.

Let’s Understand

Scientists and their Contribution in the Development of EM Wave Theory

Scientist Contributions
Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851) Magnetic Fields
In 1820, a Danish physicist and chemist.
During class demonstration, Oersted
investigated that a current carrying wire
caused to magnetized by a compass needle
to deflect and creates magnetic fields. His
experiment and research more meaningful
and help a lot in understanding between
electricity and magnetism.

Scientist Contribution

Andre Marie Ampere (1775-1836) Electrodynamics

In 1821 a French physicist found that wires
were carrying current. He demonstrated the
magnetic effect based on the direction of
current. Ampere’s theory is called
electrodynamics. It states that when the two
parallel portions of a circuit attract one
another if the currents in them are flowing in
the same direction and repel one another if
the current flows in the opposite direction.
So, Ampere provides a mathematical
relationship between magnetic fields and
electric currents.

2
Michael Faraday (1791-1867) Electromagnetic Induction
Faraday was an English scientist who
contributed to the study of electromagnetism
and electrochemistry. Twelve years after the
discovery. Faraday (1831) conducted
induction experiment showing the effect of
currents on magnets. Based on his studies
found that the magnetic field created around
a conductor carried a direct current, thereby
establishing the basis for the concept of
electromagnetic field in physics. This is the
key principle in understanding the
application of electricity. He also discovered
the principles of magnetic induction,
diamagnetism, and the laws of electrolysis.

James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) Electromagnetic Wave Theory

Maxwell (1873) was a Scottish scientist in
the field of mathematical physics. He
predicts the connection of magnetism and
electricity leading directly to the prediction
of electromagnetic waves. He formulated
the Electromagnetic Wave Theory which
explained that light electric current should
be capable of radiating energy in the form
of electromagnetic waves. He contributed
to in making equations about the
relationship of electricity and magnetism.

3
Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894) Hertz and Electromagnetic Waves
In 1885, Hertz, a German physicist, he
demonstrated that the electromagnetic
waves performed by Maxwell exist. He
showed evidence of electromagnetic
wave and links it to light. The discovery of
electromagnetic waves led to the
development of the radio. In recognition
of his contributions, his name was used
as an SI unit for wave frequency which is
equivalent to cycle/second, or the unit is
hertz (Hz).
