(1) Which of the following sets of vectors form a vector subspace?

(i) All invertible matrices (matrices having inverse) of order n × n.


(ii) All square matrices A such that AB = BA, where B is a fixed matrix.
(iii) All square matrices A such that A2 = A.
(iv) The set of all real polynomials of degree ≤ n and having 2 as a root.
(v) All vectors (x1 , x2 , x3 ) in R3 s.t. x21 + x22 + x23 ≤ 4.

(vi) All real-valued functions f defined on [a, b] such that a f (x) dx = 2.

(2) Determine whether the following sets of vectors form a vector space. If yes, then
find a basis and dimension of the vector space.

(i) The set of vectors (b1 , b2 , b3 ) with first component b1 = 0.


(ii) All linear combinations of two vectors (1, 1, 0) and (2, 0, 1).
(iii) The vectors (b1 , b2 , b3 ) which are scalar multiples of (1, 2, 3).
(iv) (x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x = y = z .


(v) (x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x = y or x = z .


(vi) All scalar matrices of order n × n.


(vii) All vectors (v1 , v2 , v3 ) in R3 with 4v1 + v3 = 0, 3v2 = v3 .
(viii) All vectors (v1 , v2 , v3 ) in R3 such that 5v1 − 3v2 + 2v3 = 0.
(ix) All 3 × 3 matrices with trace zero.

(4) Write a basis for the row-space and column-space of each matrix and find the rank.
