Course Objectives: The student will:


• Illustrate a good foundation about the basic use of Inorganic and Organic chemicals used in of microbiology and analytical laboratories.
• Inculcate the approved methods for handling chemicals and instruments following mandatory safety guidelines
• Develop an understanding of how to keep records and document data.
• Recapitulate the basics of chemistry and analytical techniques for testing various compounds
• Build on their basic knowledge of computer software and maintenance of data integrity

Prerequisites:
To study this course, a student must have had the basic knowledge of chemistry and biology

Course Contents/Syllabus Weightage (%)


Module I: Basics of bioanalytical techniques 20
Understanding the principle and use of spectrophotometer, TLC, column chromatography, GC, HPLC, centrifuge, electrophoresis
Module II: Basics of microbiological techniques 20
Streaking, spread plating, fermentation of bacteria/ other microbes, autoclaving/sterilization, concept of automated labs
Module III: preparation of Buffers and common lab solvents and media for microbiology 20
Concept of acids/ bases, concentration/ dilution of solutions, titration, various microbiological medium for various types of bacteria/microbes
Module IV: Good documentation practices and storage practices for chemicals and products 20
Drafting and following SOPs, maintaining or recording data, revision/ cancellation of documents, checking leakage/ defects in chemicals,
identifying storage areas and special storage requirements for chemicals and products, maintenance and calibration of Material handling
equipment as per SOP, statistical analysis of test data, interpreting images, graphs, diagrams for typical product specifications, job cards,
procedures, material labels and safety information as provided
Module V: Ensuring cleanliness and safety in lab and proper work environment 20
Liquid and solid waste management, concept of clean rooms, team work and coordination with supervisor, different quality management
systems (ISO-9000, ISO-14001, OHSAS-18000) and good laboratory and manufacturing practices, risk and impact of not following defined
procedures, communicating confidential and sensitive information discretely to authorized person as per the SOP, planning the sequence for
cleaning the area to avoid re-soiling clean areas and surfaces, dealing with and reporting accidental damage, caused while carrying out the
work, escalation procedures for soils or stains that could not be removed, work in a team and other behavioural skills required to support the
small group activities (e.g. quality circle, cross functional team, suggestion scheme)

Lab/Experiments
1.) Lab analytical techniques
a) Learning to use and maintain instruments like the pH meter, Spectrophotometer, centrifuge, colony counter, autoclave
b) Use analytical techniques like TLC, GC, HPLC
2.) Basic microbiological Techniques
a) Learning to start and maintain microbial cultures on solid agar plates and liquid media
b) Basic techniques, e.g. streaking, spreading, determining colony forming units
c) Fermentation techniques in shake flask
3.) Preparation of common lab solutions and media
a) Preparation of PBS
b) Preparation of buffers, microbiological media (broth and agar)
4) Application of Software Products (Office, chemsketch, scilab, matlab, hyperchem, etc.)
a) Learning to use tools e.g. Office, chemsketch, scilab, matlab, hyperchem
b) Drafting and sending emails and keeping inventories

Course Learning Outcomes:


On completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Recall the basic microbiology and chemistry knowledge.
2. Demonstrate the proper chemical and instrument handling technique.
3. Identify discrepancy in data and defect/ fault in chemicals/products.
4. Analyze the data of tests obtained.
5. Evaluate the cleanliness and safety compliance of work place
6. Estimate by experiments the various water parameters, amount of acid /base, contamination.

The course pedagogy will include lectures, practical, discussion, applications, presentations, reading review papers and individual. E content will
be provided to learners with a four-quadrant approach.
