EXPECTED ANSWERS

1.a)i. 1 Mark
„qualities‟ Accept any of the following

Either: Secrecy

Or: elusiveness / mysteriousness

Give 0 for: „People are constantly swallowed up‟

ii). 2 Marks
„two reasons‟ to find out what life was really

b)i. 1 Mark

c). 1 Mark
„afraid of‟ - he could lose his way in one of the rivers

- get lost in one of the tributaries/ rivers

Give 0 for: - reference to Amazon river alone e.g. “he could lose his

Question 3 – 20 marks

Excess words to the 150 required are not marked. The candidate is marked for
points in response to the given question as well as the grammar used in
expressing them.

Each point scores: 1 Mark unless otherwise indicated

1. I started to sketch the boat for the trip. (1)
