are obtained to proceed with the next activity.

8.6 Survey & Setting Out of Underground Elements/Foundations/Superstructures

8.6.1 Primary survey points will be identified and secondary control points will be established
using the values from these points. A layout drawing will be maintained which will include
all survey control points for the works. Total stations and dumpy levels will be used for
setting out the works. These instruments will be checked and calibrated at regular
intervals to ensure the works are constructed in accordance with the setting out data on

the correct lines and levels and secured to the ground with steel pegs on to which as
per structural drawing thickness blinding concrete will be poured. Blinding concrete will
be done with concrete of minimum compressive strength on 28 days — 20MPa (SRC)
with the thickness of 75mm. The width of the blinding will be kept more than the line of
cast allowing space for foundations formwork as well. Prior of concrete pouring
polyethylene sheet shall place under the concrete blinding.

8.7.2 Tanking membrane shall have applied at the top of the blinding concrete.

8.7.3 Additional 50mm thickness of screed will be placed after the installation of tanking
membrane. Screed concrete will be done with the minimum of compressive strength on
28 days — 20MPa (OPC)

8.7.4 Concrete will be cast by pump or will be directly placed into the forms from transit mixer
after approval from Client. The blinding concrete will be spread within the formwork with
hand shovels and rakes, and the surface tamped to the correct level with an aluminum
straight edge. Once the blinding surface is dry, approved bitumen paint will be applied
over the same. 1000 Gauge polyethylene sheet shall be provided over the bitumen
coating with an overlap of minimum 150mm.

 Dampening the form.

 Cooling the mixing water before use.
 Reducing the time between concrete placing & start of curing to the minimum possible.
 Shading of the concrete works where practicable.

8.16.4 The thickness of the layers will be between 30 and 45 cm for reinforced concrete,
the thickness depending on the width of forms, the amount of reinforcement and the

8.17 Consolidation of Concrete

8.17.1 The concrete will be carefully compacted and worked around the reinforcement steel
and into the corners of the formwork so that the concrete will be in close contact with
the reinforcement steel to produce a dense homogeneous mass.

will always be available in the event of breakdown.
8.17.3 A 50mm diameter internal vibrator shall be deemed capable of compacting 20m3 per
Hr. Internal vibrators shall be capable of producing not less than 10.000 cycles per
minute.
8.17.4 Vibrators shall be so manipulated as to work the concrete thoroughly around the
reinforcement and embedded fixtures and into corners and angles of the forms.
Vibrators shall not be used, as a mean to cause concrete to flow to its position is lieu of
lacing. The vibration at any point shall be of sufficient duration to accomplish
compaction. After initial set of concrete, the forms shall not be jarred and no stair shall
be placed on the ends of projecting reinforcement.
8.17.5 Concreting in any one part or section of the work will be carried out in one continuous
operation.
8.17.6 In the event of a complete plant breakdown a proper construction joints will be formed.
Before pouring the next adjacent section, the joint will be prepared by chipping and wire
brushing of the surface to remove all laitance.
8.17.7 Concreting during heavy rain, sandstorm and extreme outside temperature shall be
avoided.

8.18 Removal of Forms

the concrete works to see if any defects, which require remedial works, shall be
treated.

8.19 Curing of Concrete

8.19.1 The QC engineer will check that curing starts as soon as possible after placing of the
concrete and immediately after removal of formwork.
8.19.2 Curing shall be done as per contract specifications.
8.19.3 The concrete shall be prevented from drying out by being sprayed with clean fresh
water and covered with hessian for at least 7 days, water using for the curing purposes.
8.19.4 Water Curing

membrane is placed, water curing shall begin within four (4) hours of placement.
The water used for curing shall conform to the requirements in paragraph
5.01.2.3 "Water” in these General Specifications.
 Surfaces to be water cured shall be covered with cotton mats, double thickness
burlap, plastic, polyethylene, other equivalent absorbent and moisture sealing
materials. The absorbent material shall be placed around and behind all
reinforcing steel to completely cover the concrete surface. The material shall be
