Discussion
What is a switch?
Switch-is a device for opening and closing electrical circuits under normal load
condition, usually operated manually. The first ever switch used on a mechanism is
called ‘The Quick Break Mechanism. It was invented by JHON HENRY HOLMES IN
1884.

Types of Switches
1. Toggle switch- are electrical switches that have a lever or handle that can be

flipped up or down to control the flow of electricity.
concepts and practicing
new skills # 1 have an operating lever that can be pushed up and down or left
and right to switch an electrical circuit.

Advantages
 These switches are ideal to use with circuit boards.
 These switches are available in small & standard sizes.

Disadvantage
 make some clicking sound while operating them,
 It is applicable in low voltage circuits only.

E. Discussing new 2. Push button switch- operate via a pushing or pulling action that moves the
concepts and practicing operating part in the direction of the force required to open or close the contacts.
new skills # 2
Advantages
 Push button switches are very easy to operate. ...
 Can be used in a wide variety of applications.

Disadvantage
 Limited functionality: Push button switches typically only provide a
simple on/off or momentary contact function, which may not be suitable
for more complex applications.
 Limited control: Push button switches do not provide variable control,
which may be required in some applications.
3. Single Pole Switch- A single pole switch has one input and one output, it has two
states; “on” or “off”. They can be wired either normally open or normally closed and can
be either latching or momentary.

Advantages
 They have a simple on/off function...
 Single-pole switches are generally less expensive than more complex
switches, making them a cost-effective choice for basic lighting and
electrical control.

Disadvantage
 The main disadvantage of a single-pole switch is its limited
functionality.
 It can only control a single circuit, which may be a limitation in more
complex electrical setups.

4. SPDT OR Single Pole Double Throw Switch - is a switch that only has a
single input and can connect to and switch between 2 outputs. This means it has
one input terminal and two output terminals.
-

Example of Single Pole Double Throw Switch

a. 3 way switch- is an electrical switch used to control the lamp in two
location.
ACTIVITY 3: TRY ME CHALLENGE!
Direction: Each group will perform the wiring of a 3-way switch. Use the
rubric for your guide.
F. Developing mastery
(Leads to formative
Assessment 3)
Steps in wiring 3- way switch
1. Prepare the diagram of the 3-way switch connection in two different
location.
2. Connect the ground wire to the one terminal of the receptacle.
3. Connect the live wire to the common terminal of the 1st 3-way switch.
4. Connect the the n0.1 terminal of the 1st 3-way switch to the #1 terminal of
nd
the 2 3-way switch.
5. Connect the no.3 terminal of the 1st 3-way switch to the #3 terminal of the
nd
2 3-way switch.
6. Connect the common terminal of the 2nd 3-way switch to the one terminal
of the recceptacle.
7. Test the connection using multitester.
8. Energized.-
