TOPIC: Probability
Probability - the extent to which an event is likely to occur, measured by the ratio of the
favorable cases to the whole number of cases possible.
- Denoted by P
- P=n/N ; where n is favorable outcome(s) and N is the total possible outcomes
Experiment – is any process that generates set of data.
examples: Flipping a coin, tossing a die, drawing a card from a deck
An experiment is said to be a random or a chance process if:
a.) All possible outcomes are known before it is performed.
b.) No particular outcome can be predicted with certainty before performance of the trial.
Sample Space – is a set of all possible outcomes of an experiment denoted by S
Each outcome in a sample space is called element or sample point.
Null Space – or empty space is a subset of the sample space that contains no elements.
- Denoted by Ø
Methods of writing the elements:
1. Listing Method ex S= {head, tail}
2. Defining/Statement or Rule Method ex S={x|x is all faces of a coin}
| is read as “such that”
-this method is practical to use if all outcomes are too many to enumerate such as cities
in the world with more than one million population.
3. Tree diagram Method
Head
Ex S
Tail
