Reading
7 Read the diary extract, written by a girl called Holly. Decide if the sentences are
True (T) or False (F).
1 The storm stopped Holly and Elsa from going to school on Wednesday. ______

2 Holly’s dad went out to move the fallen trees while it was still raining. ______

3 Holly preferred helping on the farm to going to school. ______

4 There were some floods around the houses where Holly lives. ______

5 Elsa and Holly both enjoy knitting with their grandmother. ______

My name’s Holly and I live with my family on a farm in the north of Scotland.
Wednesday
1 My sister Elsa and I couldn’t go to school today because there was a bad storm
and it rained a lot all day. Then during the evening, the wind started blowing
really strongly – a real hurricane – and it made the electricity go off, so
everywhere was dark and we couldn’t watch TV.

Thursday
2 We woke up to find that several of the trees on the farm were lying on the
ground, and the rain was still falling. When it finally stopped, my dad asked
some of his men to help him move the trees.
3 Our school was closed again today because of the storm yesterday, so my sister
and I helped too. It was much more interesting than going to school!

Friday
4 Finally the school was open again. We downloaded some pictures of the storm – it
was absolutely awesome! We were lucky that our houses weren’t damaged and
that there were no floods.

Saturday
5 Elsa and I stayed at home in the morning and helped Dad to give some food to
the animals. Then our grandma came and gave us another lesson in knitting. It’s
very traditional here – we’re not far from the sea and the people that go out in
boats to catch fish often wear traditional knitted jumpers to keep warm. Elsa
loves it – she’s really good at it. I find it quite difficult – and not very
interesting!
