Introductory Message

Welcome to Mathematics 8 Learning Activity Sheets!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Applying Theorems on Triangle Inequalities

I. Learning Competency

 Applies theorems on triangle inequalities (M8GE-IVb-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem. This theorem states that

the measure of any exterior angle of a triangle is greater than both non-
adjacent interior angles or remote interior angles. In the figure below,
∠JBP > ∠JOB
∠JBP > ∠OJB

Triangle Inequality Theorem. This theorem states that the sum

of lengths of two sides of the triangle will always be greater than the
length of the third side. In the figure below,
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 +̅̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐶 > ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐶
̅̅̅̅ + 𝐵𝐶
𝐴𝐶 ̅̅̅̅ > ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 B
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 + 𝐴𝐶̅̅̅̅ > 𝐵𝐶
̅̅̅̅
A C
Hinge Theorem. This theorem states that if two triangles have
two congruent sides, then the one with the larger included angle has
the longer third side.
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 ≅ 𝐷𝐸 ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐷𝐹
𝐴𝐶 ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅ < 𝐸𝐹
𝐵𝐶 ̅̅̅̅
∠A < ∠D

Converse of the Hinge Theorem. Given that two sides of one

triangle are congruent to two sides of a second triangle. If the third side
of the first triangle is longer than the third side of the second triangle,
then the included angle of the first triangle is larger than the included
angle of the second triangle.

IV. Activity Proper

Exercise 1: What I Know

A. Write the possible third side of the triangle given its two sides.

1. {3, 4, ____} 2. {4, 4, ____} 3. {7, 4, ____}

B. Write the correct inequality on the following based on the figure below.

4. ∠O ___ ∠B 5. ∠J ___ ∠B J

6. ∠JBO ___ ∠B 7. ∠JBO + ∠J ___ ∠JBP O B P

C. Write the appropriate symbol for each based on the figure below where
hinge theorem and its converse are used. Assume that the two alligators are
the same.
