Questions:

Characteristics of Light
Some materials allow some light to travel through them and these
are what we call translucent materials. They are not clear and
are usually frosted. Some examples of translucent materials are
the plastic bags being used in the supermarket, frosted glass or
plastic such as the ones used in your ruler, and wax paper that is
used in baking. When light passes through translucent materials,
not all of the light can go through.
3
Opaque materials block the passage of light. They are usually
solid and colored. Examples of opaque materials are wood, stones,
metals, concrete, rubber, and cotton.
When light hits the surface of different materials, there are three
ways that could happen (Woodford 2020); (1) it will pass through,
(2) it will reflect, and (3) it will sink in or be absorbed.
Light travels in a straight line and when it hits a smooth and shiny
opaque surface, that light bounces off and gets reflected. This
bouncing of light is reflection.

When you placed the mirror in front of you, you saw a colored
image of yourself. The image comes from the light that is bounced
off when it hits the smooth shiny surface of the mirror. The light
goes to a different direction towards your face and your eyes. There
was reflection of light and this is why we could see our own image
on the mirror.

Fig. 5. Light bounces off when it hits the mirror.
There are some materials that are not capable of reflecting light.
When light hits a rough and textured opaque surface of a material,
the light sinks in and disappear as there is no bouncing of light.

Let Us Practice
Direction: Get the following materials listed on the table below and
a flashlight. Go to a slightly dimmed room and direct the flashlight
on each material. Observe if the light from the flashlight passed
through or not. Determine whether the material is transparent,
translucent, or opaque. Put a check (√) mark on the proper
column. Refer to the example as guide.
