PERFORMING

MENSURATION and
CALCULATIONS
A computer’s performance relies
on its memory and processor’s
capacity.
It is important to be familiar with
these when dealing with
computers and how they are
measured.

MEASURING TOOLS
❑ MEMORY CARD
❑ THE PROCESSOR
❑ VIDEO CARD
MEMORY CARD
➢ Refers to a hardware device that can
store information.
➢ Examples are Random Access Memory
(RAM) and Read-only Memory (ROM).
➢ It is used by the operating system,
applications, and other hardware
components.
➢ The capacity of the memory is measured
in bytes.
MEMORY
CARD
THE PROCESSOR
➢ Is another term for the Central
Processing Unit (CPU).
➢ Hardware component that responds to
and processes the instructions needed
for the computer to run.
➢ Measured in Megahertz or Gigahertz.
➢ This is the measurement of how much
information it can process per second
PROCESSOR
VIDEO CARD
➢ allows the computer to send graphical
information to a video display, for example, a
monitor.
➢ It is measure in megabytes or gigabytes. Most
computers used for gaming, photo editing, and
video editing require video cards with high
capacity.
➢ This is to cater to the need of these
applications for faster frame rate and higher
definition of images.

CONVERSION
and
CALCULATIONS
❖ Bit – a number that is either 1 or 0. 1 is on; 0 is off.
❖ Byte – composed of 8 bits.
❖ Kilobytes (KB) – composed of 1, 024 bytes.
❖ Megabyte (MB) – equivalent to 1, 048, 576 bytes or
1, 024 kilobytes.
❖ Gigabyte (GB) – equivalent to 1, 073, 741, 824 bytes
or 1,024 megabytes.
❖ Terabytes (TB) – equivalent to 1, 099, 511, 627, 776
bytes or 1, 024 gigabytes or 1, 046, 576 megabytes
DECIMAL TO BINARY
To convert decimal to binary, the following steps are followed:
1. Write the number in decimal.
2. Divide the number by 2.
3. Write the result below the number.
4. Write the remainder on the right side. The remainder will either be 1 or
0. 5. Divide the result by 2 and write the remainder on the right side.
6. Continue steps 2-3 until the dividend is equal to zero.
7. Read the series of 1s and 0s on the right from the bottom to top. This is
the binary equivalent of the decimal number
BINARY to DECIMAL
To check the result, convert the binary digit to decimal. Follow
the steps below.

1. Write the binary digit.

2. Start from the leftmost number, multiply the digit by the
value placeholder.
3. Continue doing this until you reach the rightmost number.
4. Add the results.
MEASURING TOOLS
❑ MULTIMETER
o THE PROCESSOR
o VIDEO CARD
WHAT IS MULTIMETER?
✓ is a measuring tool that measures voltage, current,
and resistance. Can be used in measuring battery
voltage, finding faults in circuits, and many other
complex diagnostics. It is the best tool for
troubleshooting problems in the circuits of the
computer system.
WHAT IS MULTIMETER?
✓ The multimeter has two probes: negative (black) and
positive (red). It also has a range selector that allows
you to select what you are going to measure whether
Alternating Current (AC) Voltage, Direct Current (DC)
Voltage, current, or resistance. There are two types of
multimeters: analog and digital.
ANALOG
MULTIMETER
➢ Is use a needle that moves
on a scale to indicate the
value being measured.
➢ These are less expensive
than digital multimeters but
are also more difficult to
read. These can also easily
be damaged if they are
dropped
DIGITAL
MULTIMETER
➢ Use an LCD screen to provide
the value being measured.
Instead of counting and
reading where the needle is
pointing, the digital
multimeter simply shows the
value on the screen.
➢ This is easier to read and use
than the analog multimeters
SAFETY HANDLING PROCEDURES
IN USING MEASURUNG
INSTRUMENTS
✓ The multimeter is one of the most common tools used in
electronics. It is commonly used with electricity and
circuits. It is very important to know how to use the
multimeter safely to avoid damaging it and harming the
one using it. The following will guide you on how to use
the multimeter.
✓ Always bear in mind what you are measuring and never put the test
probe into the wrong socket to avoid electric shock.

✓ Be careful when measuring voltage. When measuring alternating

current (AC) voltage, always make sure that the probes don’t touch
one another when they are still connected to the electrical circuit.
This is to avoid a short circuit that will create a spark or cause a
flame that can harm you.

✓ Check the probes of the multimeter. Make sure that the insulation is
not cracked or worn. When your fingers touch the probe conductor,
you can get electrocuted
MAINTENANCE OF MEASURING
INSTRUMENTS
✓ To maintain a multimeter, you must perform the
following:
1. Calibrate the multimeter frequently.
2. Clean the instrument and keep it a place far from dust, fumes,
moisture, and heat.
3. Replace ohmmeter batteries regularly.
4. When checking resistance, always turn the power of the circuit off.
5. Check the polarity of the circuit before connecting it to the
multimeter.
