Korea

 peninsular country in east Asia


 Total area of 85,236 square miles (220, 766 sq. km)
 Divided in year 1945 into:
o Communist north
o Non-Communist south
 The north part of the Korea is bonded by Manchuria (a region in china)
 The north east part of the Korea is bonded with Soviet Siberia
o It has a border 10 miles
 The southern part of the Korea extends at 620 miles between:
o yellow sea and;
o Sea of Japan
 Korean people are part of the Tungusic branch of the Mongoloid race
o Their land has first occupied around 5000 to 10,000 years ago.
o Tungusic people are the people of the north
o Proto- Caucasoid are the people of the south

Korean War (1950-1953)

 invasion bought by North Korea to South Korea


 The country Korea was no longer divided in the 38th parallel by a demilitarized
zone of 487 sq. meters along the armistice line.
o This line extends south of the parallel in the west
o This line extends north of the parallel in the east

The Republic of Korea

 administers an area of 38,211 sq. miles

The Democratic People Republic

 administers an area of 46, 540 sq. miles

1. Kim Dae Jung


 President of Korea year 1998
 Pursue a policy of reconciliation with North Korea year 2000.
 awarded a Nobel prize for his efforts
2. Kim Young Sam
 First civilian president of South Korea in 1993
 Went into politics year 1954
 Wins a seat for national assembly 2 years after graduating
 his democratic reforms resulted in:
o eviction from the national assembly
o a 2-year house arrest
 Due to increasing public protest and democratic reforms led him to
become the President.
3. Roh Tae Woo
 President of South Korea year 1988
 He admitted the South Korea to the U.S year 1991
 He supported Kim Young Sam in 1992 presidential elections
4. Syngman Rhee
 The first president of South Korea in 1948
 He ran the country through the Korean war.
 Year 1960, he was forced to be exiled as his grew totalitarian.
5. Kim II Sung
 Also known as Kim Sung Chu.
 Was the leader of North Korea 1948-1994
 He also served as a guerilla fighter against Japanese in 1930s
 He is also a soviet leader in Korean unit during world war.
 His effort to extend the power to South Korea caused the beginning of
Korean war.

Historical Places

1. Changgyeong Palace (early 1100s)


 A temple in Seoul
 Sits within the Changgyeong palace grounds
2. Bulguksa Temple (AD 751)
 One of the most elaborate Buddhist temples in South Korea.
 The stairways of the temple are symbolic of the Buddhist journey toward
spiritual enlightenment.
3. The Gyeongbok (1395 and is reconstructed 1867)
 Also known as Shining Happiness.
 A palace in Seoul as the royal residence of the Chonson (Joseon)
dynasty.
4. The Dongdaemun (14th Century)
 Also known as Gate of Uplifting Benevolence
 One of the five remaining gates of the original nine entryways to seoul.
 Was built by King Taejo of Choson (Joseon) dynasty.
5. P’yongyang (1955)
 Was damaged completely during Korean war
 Rebuilt with the help of china and soviet assistance
6. Tower of Juche
 A prominent monument in P’yongyang at its center
 The monument commences the 70th birthday of Kim II Sung
o Kim II Sung is the one who introduced juche idea
 Rising to up to 170m (560ft)
 The tower glorifies Juche idea
o A philosophy of self-reliance

1. The Atlantic Charter (Aug 1941)


 United States, china, and Britain announced on Dec 1,1943:
o that Korea shall become a free and independent country.
 The USSR abided by this statement on August 8, 1945.

2. The Creation of Republic of Korea (1948)


 The United Nations organized elections in Korea that led to the creation of
ROK also known as south of the 38th parallel.

3. The Korean War (June 25,1950)


 Started on June 25, 1950
 This started due to the North Korea trying to expand their territory by
occupying South Korea.

4. South Korea pleaded an armistice (June 1953)


 South Korea proposed an armistice to South Korea:
o To stop the war.
o The armistice was signed in July by UN, China, and North Korea.
o South Korea refused to sign.
Culture

 Korea was influenced by Chinese from ancient times until the 20th century.

1. Painting
 In paintings, Koreans can remember the masterworks of the distant past
from the Three kingdoms which were all joined by Silla in 7th century:
o Koguryo
 extraordinary Chinese style wall paintings are found.
o Silla
o Paekche
 In the contemporary period, traditional styles of Chinese developed
successfully by western painting:
o Yi Sang-bom
 Was a significant figure of the old school.
o King In-Sung
 Canvases are based on modern realism.
o Yi In-Song
 Canvases are based on modern realism.

2. Ceramics
 Pottery and Ceramics are perfected in Korea.
 Its strength relies on the production of serene and natural beauty
 During 11th to 13th century:
o Koreans learned high fired porcelains technique to create a
distinctive green glazed called celadon in porcelains.
o This was later then appreciated by Japanese, and Chinese whom
they refer celadon as “one of the 10 best things in the world”

3. Music
 Sinawi,
o music performed for the deities by female shaman in a ritual
dance.
o Particularly in Southern Korea.
o The melody produced by musicians is called kyemyon
o The main soloist is playing a cylindrical oboe called the piri.

4. Literature
 Korean literature is combined with:
o Religious, and philosophical principles of Buddhism
o Confucianism
o Daoism
 A male dominated elite develop the classical literature at the:
o Early times until the end of choson dynasty in 1910
o They wrote in the Chinese script called Hangeul
 Hangeul
o It was first introduced year 1446 and did not gain widespread
acceptance until the 20th century.
o The accessibility to all classes expanded the social base of Korean
literature during modern period.

5. Traditions
 Marriage and family
o South Koreans decided on their spouses
o Many abstain from traditional wedding yet marry in public halls in
contemporary clothes.
o Women retain their birth names after birth.
o The family is bounded with a strong sense of duty and obligation.
