7. In an experiment a drug is added to two identical flasks, each containing the same amount of
certain bacteria. The drug is then allowed to react with the bacteria for various times in z hours.
It is found that the amount of bacteria left, h units varies inversely as (z- 5) hours. In one flask

there were 4 5 units of bacteria left after 8 hours. Calculate the amount of units of bacteria left
in another flask after 9 hours.

8. The gravitational potential energy, G joules of an object is directly proportional to its height h m,
above the surface of the earth. When the object is at a height of 55 m above the surface of the
earth, its gravitational potential energy is 4400 J. Find the gravitational potential energy when
the object is at a height of 113.5 m.

9. (a) Express 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 12 in the form 𝑦 = (𝑥 + 𝑝)2 − 𝑞

(b) Write down the x- and y- intercepts and the minimum point of the graph
(c) Hence, sketch the graph 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 8

(d) State the equation of the line of symmetry of the graph

10. The variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 are connected by the equation 𝑦 = 3 − 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2
