A. Preparation
a. Greetings
Good morning, class! How are Good morning, ma’am. We are fine. We are
you today? excited for today’s lesson.

b. Prayer

our class by giving gratitude and
asking guidance to the Lord. Can

I have here plastic spoons, forks

You will be grouped into 2, the


first group will be the spoon
group and the second one will
be the fork group.

Each group must pick their


group leader. The leader will
stand in front beside the box
and the remaining members
will fall in line holding their
corresponding utensils.

The group leaders will make a


toss coin to determine whose
gonna pick first.

For example, if the leader from


the spoon group pick the
number 4,his/her members will
raise their utensil upward.

Next, if the leader from the fork


group pick the number 3,
his/her members will also raise
their utensil upward.

Then, they are going to pair


spoon and fork and All the
paired utensils will be
discarded, and the remaining
members of either group will
remain standing.

Again, both leaders will pick and


do the same instructions.

After 5 continuously doing the


mechanics, the group who has
the remaining members
standing will be the winner.

For today, we are going to learn
adding and subtracting integers. IntegeInteger is a whole number that can be

today. You are absolutely right. In other
words, the sum of two positive integers
is always positive and the sum of two
negative integers is always negative. Let
us have an example. What is the sum of
(+12) + (+13)?
+25
Correct!
Okay, how about (-12) + -(13)?
-25
Correct again! Okay, I assume you all
understand those rules of addition.
Let’s go further. Look at these.
(3) + (4) = 7
(-3) + (-4) = -7
In adding integers with the same signs,
you need to add like whole numbers
and the sum follows the sign of both
addends. As you can see on the first
equation, 3 and 4 are positive so the
answer is positive 7. On the second
equation, the answer is -7 since the
addends are both negative. The idea is
the same with the first rule. So, are we
clear with this? You can ask questions.
All clear, ma’am.
Okay, we are done talking about adding
integers with the same signs. Now, how
about unlike signs? Look at what is
written on the board.

(-3) + (4) = 1
(3) + (-4) = -1

Listen to these steps in adding integers


with unlike signs. First, disregard the
signs of the two addends. So do not
think about the signs first. Then, obtain
the difference. We have here 3 and 4
and the difference is?
1, ma’am.
Yes, it’s 1. As you already got the
difference, affix now the sign of the
bigger number to the sum. Since 4 is
bigger than 3 and 4 is positive. The
answer will be positive. Do you
understand?
Yes, ma’am.
Let us have another example. Let us
compute (3) + (-4). Again, the
difference is 1. But this time, the bigger
number, which is 4, is negative. So, the
answer will be?
-1, ma’am.
Yes. You’re getting it. Are you all
catching up?

If so, we can go now with subtraction.
Who can tell me what is subtraction?

Subtraction means to take away or to minus
That’s right! Thank you _______. from the first quantity.
Subtracting integers is a little bit more
complicated than addition but as long
as you know the rules, you will get the
correct answer. We just have to follow
these rules. Using scratch paper, let us
compute:

(-8) – (-3) = ____

In subtracting with same signs:


First, change the sign of the numbers to
be subtracted or the subtrahend.

Step1: (-8) – (3) = ____

Change the subtraction operation to


addition.

Step 2: (-8) + (3) =____

Follow the rule in adding integers with


unlike signs. Then, copy the sign of the
number with larger value in the answer.
Step 3: (-8) + (3) = -5

Did you get the correct answer?

Very good! Now, follow me again as we


solve for another equation: Yes, ma’am.

(-8) – (3) = ____

These are the steps in subtracting with


unlike signs:
Change the sign of the subtrahend and
follow the rules in adding integers: The
sum of two positive integers is always
positive and the sum of two negative
integers is always negative.

Solve: (-8) – (3) = ____


Step1: (-8) – (-3) = ____
Step 2: (-8) + (-3) = -11
