Initially five locations around the school (data points) were assessed using
BEFORE the SR4S app. Given the results of the risk evaluation and local conditions,
three were prioritized (data points 3, 4 and 5) for further investigation and
improvement.
March 2018: As part of the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety
(BIGRS), in partnership with the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility
and NACTO-GDCI, the Mobility Secretariat started a pilot project in the
area. The countermeasures were first tested with temporary materials
to verify their impact. Cones and plants were introduced to create safe
pedestrian crossings to the school, protect vulnerable users and enforce
motorised vehicles to travel at a safe speed.
The temporary solution allowed the project team to measure the safety

implemented.

FOUNDING
SPONSOR The Star Rating for Schools App (SR4S) is the first systematic approach based on
evidence to analyse, measure, manage and communicate the risk associated with
the road infrastructure around schools. The tool combines an easy-to-use School
Assessment Android app and a Global Reporting for Schools web application. These
MAJOR DONOR applications work together to harness the power of the International Road Assessment
Programme’s (iRAP) Pedestrian Star Ratings to measure the risk children are exposed to
on their journey to school.
