SR4S 2020 Flyer

The document describes Star Rating for Schools (SR4S), a tool for measuring road safety risks to children traveling to and from school. SR4S assesses road features and traffic conditions to assign a star rating from 1 to 5 stars, with 1 being the least safe, to each section of a school route. The summary describes several organizations that have used SR4S to identify road improvements and advocate for safer routes to schools around the world.

recognising the application’s huge potential to reduce risk and save the lives of pedestrians worldwide.

Eleven world-leading NGO’s involved in school road safety have

been involved in SR4S’s development.

These Lead Partners incorporated SR4S into their own

approaches to measure the impact of interventions that are
already saving lives and preventing serious injuries, and to
advocate to eliminate high risk locations in local communities.

STORIES OF SUCCESS

The Gonzalo Rodríguez Foundation has been incorporating SR4S

into their programmes since 2017, with 93 schools assessed
in Uruguay, Argentina and Chile and 87 of those improved.
Successful partnership with local authorities has led to life-
saving road upgrades and raised the interest of governments in
expanding the programme. The road upgrades have made the
journey to school safer for over 27,000 children.

Through a comprehensive approach, six of those schools have

been improved with school zone warnings, pedestrian crossing
facilities, refuge islands and new speed limits of 30 km/h in school
zones. This has inspired government interest in an enhanced
programme.

conception in Mexico. As part of the pilot of SR4S, Safe Kids

trained 80 coalitions to undertake assessments in the United
States. In North Dakota, Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead has assessed
three schools with SR4S and identified countermeasures that can
significantly improve the safety of students.

Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) members

have delivered 3-star or better journeys to schools worldwide on
every continent from Morocco to Nepal, and South East Europe
to Latin America. To support the global potential of member
clubs, FIA has developed the FIA School Assessment Toolkit,

an online repository outlining the steps to action with templates

and supporting materials to help clubs in establishing school
assessment projects.

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety trains their

Member advocates on evidence-based programmes. The

Alliance Advocates training programme has provided SR4S

training to members in 13 African and 8 Asian countries.
In Iran, Alliance member Road Safety Pioneers has assessed
8 schools in Tehran and Mashhad and led road upgrades in
4 of them. The local road authority found the SR4S methodology
more accurate and reliable for prioritising high-risk locations for
intervention.

for children supported by tools such as SR4S in India, Mexico,

Romania, South Africa, Tunisia and Vietnam. In addition, the
Global Road Safety Leadership Course held in Buenos Aires
(March 2019), dedicated a full day of the training course to SR4S,
building the capacity of over 60 road safety professionals.

Youth for Road Safety (YOURS) has launched the Youth Stars
programme in partnership with FedEx and iRAP. Five Master
Trainers have been trained in SR4S and will conduct road
assessments and build partner coalitions to empower educational
communities near schools and universities to advocate for safer
road infrastructure in Belize, Colombia, Kenya, USA and Vietnam.
