Design of shear wall

Material constants
Grade of concrete = M25
Grade of steel = Fe415
Preliminary dimensioning
Horizontal length of the wall, L = 4m
Thickness of the wall, t = 250mm
The minimum thickness of shear walls shall not be less than 150mm
(As per IS 13920: 2016, clause 10.1.2)
Hence, the thickness provided is safe.

Determination of design loads

As per IS 13920: 2016, clause 10.4.2.1
Pul= 0.8(DL + LL) +1.2EL= (0.8×610) +(1.2×110) = 620kN
As per IS 456: 2000
Pu2= 1.2(DL+LL+EL) = 110kN
Design moment = 1328.3kNm
Design shear force = 50.43kN
Check for boundary elements
As per IS 13920: 2016, clause 10.4.1
Boundary elements are provided if extreme fibre stress exceeds 0.2fck.

A Z 250 x 4000 1.33 x 10 2
= 8.89N/mm2 & -8.67 N/mm2

0.2fck=0.2×25 = 5N/mm2< 8.67mm

Hence, boundary elements are required
Therefore, adopt flanged shear wall with central length 2800mm and two ends 300 x 600mm

Area of flanged section = (2 × 600 × 300) + (2800 × 250) = 1060000mm2

Vu= factored shear force = 182.3kN
tw = Thickness of web = 250mm

τ v= 310.5 x 10 = .38N/mm2
250 x 3200
.25√fck = 1.118 N/mm2 > .38 N/mm2 (IS 13920: 2016, clause 10.1.7)
But wall thickness is 250mm which is greater than 200mm.
Hence, steel has to be provided on 2 layers.
