Mid Term (1) DEFENSE

The document describes the seismic analysis and structural design of a proposed multi-storey commercial building located in Itahari, Sunsari, Nepal. Key aspects summarized include: - The building will be a G+3 structure with a basement and special moment resisting frame system in Seismic Zone V. - Preliminary designs were conducted for structural elements like slabs, beams, columns, and staircases based on loading calculations and code provisions. - Structural plans and load calculations were presented along with design of critical structural elements like columns, beams, slabs, and staircases. - Finite element modeling was conducted using ETABS software to check design assumptions.

PRELIMINARY
DESIGN
PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF SLAB
Largest area of slab has been taken

longer length/shorter length= 6020/5944=1.012≤2 ( so, it is a two way slab )

using deflection criteria ,

Span / d = λ

Where (Continuous slab: IS 456 clause 23.2.12a)

=1 , =1.2 , λ =1, =1 (from IS 456 clause 23.2 )

Minimum depth = 190.512 mm 150 mm

Hence , provide secondary beam ( from the mid of long span )

Shorter span = 6020/2 =3010 mm

Minimum depth = 120 mm

Using clear cover 15 mm

Overall depth of slab = (120+15) mm = 135 mm

Calculation of maximum Bending moment
considering vertical forces
Ra+ Rb= 13.647*2.680+10.12*1.257
= 49.295 KN

Taking moment about A

Rb*(2.680+1.257)-(10.125*1.257)*(2.68+1.257/2)-13.647*2.68/2=0
so,
Rb= 15.339
Ra= 33.955
Now,
Taking moment about any section x-x
Mxx= Ra*x-(13.647*x^2/2
for maximum bending moment , first derivative should be zero
Ra-13.647*x=0
so,
x= 2.488 m from Rb
and
BM max= 42.242 KNm
DESIGN OF REINFORCEMENT
Mu, lim= 0.133FckbD^2
= 106.4 KNm

Since Mu, lim is greater than BM max so the design is safe

now
Mu = 0.87* Fy* Ast*(d-Fy *Ast/(Fck *b))
solving
Ast= 607.65 mm^2
providing bar of 10 mm
Area of one bar 78.538 mm^2
spacing = 120 mm
which is main bar, so provide 10 mm bar @ 120
so, Ast provided= 654.48 mm^2
now for distribution bar
minimum reinforcement is
0.12% of bd= 206.4 mm^2
provide 8 mm bar
area of 1 bar = 50.264
spacing = 240 mm
which is main bar, so provide 8 mm bar @ 240 c/c

Check for development length:
Ld=(0.87fy )/(4τbd)

= 566.41

Design of main reinforcement

Mu = 0.87 fy Ast × d[1-Astfy/(bd fck)]
8.89*106= 0.87 × 500 × Ast × 120×[1-500*Ast25*1000*120]
Solving above equation,
Ast req =175.52 mm2
Spacing

Provide 8 mm main bars

Ast1= (3.14*d2)/4 = (3.14* 82)/4 = 50.264 mm2
S = (1000*50.264)/175.52 = 286.371< 300mm
Provide spacing S = 280 mm
Ast provided =(1000*50.264)/280 = 179.514 mm2
Provide 8 mm ø @ 280 mm c/c spacing in both directions.
Design of main reinforcement ( For Longer Span ( ly)
Mu = 0.87 fy Ast × d[1-Astfy/(bd fck)]
6.0097*106 = 0.87 × 500 × Ast × 120×[1-500*Ast25*1000*120]
Solving above equation,
Ast req = 126.197 mm2

AST ( MIN ) = 0.12 5% of BD =162 mm2,

adopt AST = 170 mm2

Spacing
Spacing ,Provide 8 mm main bars
Ast1= (3.14*d2)/4 = (3.14* 82)/4 = 50.264 mm2
S = (1000*50.264)/170 = 295.675 < 300mm
Provide spacing S = 290 mm

Ast provided =(1000*50.264)/290 = 173.324 mm2

Provide 8 mm ø @ 290 mm c/c spacing in both directions.
CALCULATION OF TORSION REINFORCEMENT
for two edge discontinuous,
Mesh size = 0.2 lx = 694.6 mm ( IS 456 : 2000 Annex D)
Area of torsion requirement = 3/4 * Ast req.
=
134.635 mm2
using 8mm Ø bar ,
Ø=8mm
Area = 50.264 mm2
spacing (s) = (1000 * 50.264)/ 134.6355
= 373.339 mm
max. spacing = 3d or 300 mm, Adopt 300 mm spacing

hence, 8mm Ø with 300 mm c/c spacing is adopted.
