Advanced Steel Design (CESP-209T)
M. Tech (CE) {Semester-2nd}
Max. Marks: 30 Time: 90 min.
Attempt All Questions
IS: 800-2007, Steel table and scientific calculator is allowed.

PART –I (Objective Type) (1*5=05 Marks)

1. (a) What are the uses of framed connections and its standard size?
(b) Differentiate between stiffener angles and framing angles.
(c) What are heavy moment connections its types?
(d) Draw neat and clean cross-section of bracket plate connection.
(e) Give the suitable reason for calculating double shear strength in framed
connection.

PART –II (Attempt any three) (5*3=15 Marks)

2. Merits and demerits of steel structures over reinforced cement concrete structures.
3. Design a Bolted framed connection to connect an ISHB 450 @ 907.43 N/m
transmitting an end reaction of 280 kN to the web of ISMC 400 @ 484.61 N/m.
Assume suitable data if any required.
4. Design an un-stiffened bolted seat connection for a beam ISMB 550 @ 1017.30 N/m
transmitting an end reaction of 85 kN, due to the factored loads, to the flange of
column ISLC 350 @ 380.63 N/m. Assume the diameter of bolt 20 mm and grade of
bolt is 4.6.
5. Define following terms:
a) Stiffened and Un-stiffened connections
b) Yield strength and ultimate strength
c) T-spilt beam
d) Meaning of ISMB 550 @ 1017.30 N/m

PART –III (Attempt any one) (10*1=10

Marks)

6. Design Stiffened bolted seat connection for a beam ISMB 250 @ 365.9 N/m
transmitting an end reaction of 280 kN, due to the factored loads, to the flange of
column ISHB 200 @ 365.9 N/m. Assume the diameter of bolt 20 mm and grade of
bolt is 4.6, steel grade is Fe-410.
7. In a framed connection an ISWB 600 @ 1423.43 N/m transmits an end reaction of
150 kN and an end moment of 60 kNm to an ISMB 500 @ 852.49 N/m column
section. Design a split beam connection.
