DESIGN BASIS REPORT

A POWER FACTOR COMPENSATION

The power factor compensation equipment has been envisaged at 6.6kV Bus for improvement of the overall power
factor of the system & Across the Motors

The 6.6 kV bus section-1 and 2 shall be connected to indoor type capacitor banks of suitable rating with series air
core reactor

6.6kV Capacitor banks for indoor installation, composed of ungrounded Y connected Capacitors, with fully insulated
neutrals and current ransformers for unbalance protection and series connected charging current inrush damping
reactors with all necessary calmps, connectors, bus work racks.

The 6.6 kV Capacitor bank design will meet the requirements of the IEC 60871 or IS 13925

B DESIGN PARAMETER CONSIDERATIONS

Ambient air temperature ( °C ) = 50

System voltage (Vs) ( kV ) = 6.6

System fault current (If) (kA ) = 25

Duration (t) ( sec ) = 1

Improvement of overall Final Power Factor (C2) -CosØ2 - lag = 0.95 As per Technical Specification

MOTOR CAPACITOR BANK SIZING CALCULATIONS

S.No Description Unit Rating Reference

A INPUT DATA

Motor Rating KW = 450

Qty No = 2

Operating Voltage KV = 6.6

Frequency Hz = 50

Power Factor of the Motor CosØ1 = 0.84

Efficiency of the Motor Ƞ = 0.95

Full load Current of the Motor Amps = 50.00

B DESIGN OF 6.6 kV POWER FACTOR COMPENSATION

Load at Bus True Power (kW) KW = 450.00

Original Power Factor (C1) Cos Ø1 = 0.84 Lag

Improvement of overall Final Power Factor (C2) Cos Ø2 = 0.95 Lag

Correction factor of Capacitor selection chart (k) = 0.31

Capacitor Required Across the Motor kVAR = (kW x (k)

= 139.5

C Checking
As per Motor
No load current of the Motor Amps 16.00
Data sheet
No load current @ 90% Amps 14.40

Capacitor bank sizing @ 90% of no load current KVAR 164.61

Recommended Capacitor bank Rating is KVAR 165.00

D Conclusion:

Hence, Recommended Capacitor Bank to compensate reactive power across the Motor terminal
is 165 KVAR
