Louis - Math AASL Mini IA

This document discusses how math helps designers find measurements of the human body for design products. It explains key anthropometric concepts like mean, range and standard deviation that designers use to analyze sample user data and determine average sizes. Examples from gaming chair company Secret Lab are provided. While math allows efficient analysis of some data, drawbacks are users in different locations may vary in size.

1) Introduction
Personal Interest:
For my mathematical mini AI I chose to write about how math helps us designers to
make digital and physical products. The reason why I picked this topic is because I would
like to know more about how designers such Ian Alexander Ang and Alaric Choo make
gaming chairs that can make us gamers feel comfortable and to make high quality gaming
chairs such as Secret Lab who has made many high quality and very comfortable gaming
chairs for the past years for the community.

Background information:
Secret Lab:
Secret Lab is a company which focuses on manufacturing and selling gaming chairs. The
company was founded in 2014 and has gained popularity for producing high-quality,
ergonomic chairs designed specifically for gamers. Secret Lab is founded by 2 big
gamers named Ian Alexander Ang and Alaric Choo. These chairs that Secret Lab makes
often feature adjustable armrests, reclining mechanisms, and various customization
options. The company has collaborated with popular game franchises, esports teams and
anime to create special edition chairs that are pretty popular to the community.

Anthropometrics:

Anthropometrics is a design term that I learned in design technology class. These

methods help us designers to find the measurement of the human body and its parts. This
method involves collecting data on the size, shape, and physical capabilities such as the
normal reach and maximal reach. Another factor of anthropometrics is percentiles and
percentile ranges, this can determine specifications such as the physical size or fit, or how
much force is required to operate a button.

Mathematical knowledge:
This AI will be effective if i use the functions for mean/range and standard deviation
formula which looks like this:
Mean: to round up the data

μ= Mean
∑Xi= summation of all data values
Xi= individual data
N= total number of data

Range: to find the difference between the biggest to the smallest

Standard deviation: to measure the spread in data values

σ = standard deviation
xi = individual data value ( x1, x2, x3, …)
μ = mean
N = size of population
Data collection:
Designers uses this function to find the general measurement on what should the design
size that they made should be, for example here i have some of my classmates names and
measurements such as their height sitting height and their wingspan:

Standing height Sitting height Wingspan Shoulder 2 Shoulder

Louis 185cm 143cm 179cm 46cm

Marco 173cm 130cm 174cm 42cm

Joe 167cm 130cm 164cm 41cm

Rionel 182cm 139cm 174cm 43.5cm

We can use the mean range and the standard deviation to find the average measurement
for each section so that designers know what to make for their design. Here is the
calculation that I did to find the mean range and the standard deviation.
Mean:
μ=707/4 = 176.75
Range:
Stand Height 185-167= 18
Sitting height 143-139= 4
Wingspan: 179-164 = 15
S2S: 46=41 = 5

Standard deviation:
Stand height = σ=√ ❑ = 8.26
Sitting height = σ=√ ❑ = 6.56

Wingspan = σ=√ ❑ = 6.29

Shoulder 2 shoulder = σ=√ ❑ = 2.17

Data display:
Standing height

Sitting height

Wingspan

Shoulder 2 Shoulder

Data analysis:
With the information that designers can get from these functions they are able to find the
general idea on what the measurement should be for the product that they will make to
sell. For example when Secret Lab is designing a gaming chair to make to the public to
sell, the will have to find the average measurement of the people around the world in
order to let them feel comfortable in this case is Range: Stand Height 185-167= 18
Sitting height 143-139= 4 Wingspan: 179-164 = 15 and S2S: 46=41 = 5 the designers
will just have to make a product that is 4 cm different for the back post's height and to
expand the 2 cm difference. And with this designers are able to make products that are
comfortable and effective for the public.

In summary, the data analysis of anthropometric can show how designers should design
their design to make the product size. Also with this method designers are able to find the
size of the design without measuring a lot of the people's measurements with the help of
the range, mean and standard deviation calculation. This method has shown many
advantages that are efficient and not time consuming considering you just have to
measure a small portion of the population. But there are drawbacks like you still have to
measure the people in different areas because what if there are people who are bigger in
other countries they will not have the experience of being comfortable which designers
don't want people to experience .
