Swachh Bharat Mission

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhiji's entire life is an important book on how to live life. It can be divided into many
different chapters. Each chapter has something crucial to learn and imbibe in one's life. One such
chapter is cleanliness. In view of this, the Indian Government launched a national campaign in
2014 known as the Swachh Bharat Mission, or Clean India Mission. The aim of this mission is to
promote cleanliness and hygiene to make India cleaner and healthier.

It was also envisaged that on the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, i.e., after 5 years of the
inauguration of this mission, India would be free of open defecation. The campaign aims to
achieve this by constructing toilets and spreading awareness about cleanliness and sanitation.
According to a survey by Niti Ayog, 98% of houses in villages now have in-house toilets. Toilets
in villages are known as ‘Izzat-ghar’. Earlier, a large number of villagers used to defecate in the
open. Such practices often lead to numerous diseases, such as cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid.
Through awareness and cleanliness drives, people now also try to keep their surroundings clean
and green.

As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), open defecation-free (ODF) drops from
49.8% (NFHS-4) to 28.3% (NFHS-5) in Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, Odisha, and UP States.

Another objective of the campaign is to promote the use of dustbins and reduce littering. In
India, where garbage collection and maintenance are huge tasks, creating a process can prove to
be beneficial. Littering is a major problem, and people often unconsciously throw it on roads and
streets. This not only creates health hazards but also makes roads and streets dirty. Garbage often
lies unattended, is further spread away by dogs and cows, and in some cases, turns fatal for cows
when they chuck polybags from it. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan tried to address this problem by
placing dustbins in appropriate places for dry and wet waste. It helps with waste management
and helps keep our surroundings clean.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been successful in creating awareness among people. We have
seen various prominent figures come forward and actively take part in the cleanliness drive.
Various Bollywood figures and MLAs of respected constituencies requested people to avoid
open defecation and use toilets. All these initiatives had a positive impact on the lives of people.
It also helped in the reduction of cases of cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid.

But even after all these efforts, the objectives were not fully achieved; hence, Swachh Bharat
was extended for another 5 years with version 2.0. One reason that people still defecate in public
is because they have no motivation or money to create toilets. Some also feel more relaxed by
going out to defecate. The government should give incentives to people so they avoid such
activities. Awareness must be created through programmes like 'Mann Ki Baat'. Only then are
we on a path to a clean and green India.

Another benefit of the Swachh Bharat, aka Clean India Mission, is that it will boost tourism.
Foreigners have the impression that India is all about slums, bad roads, and littering everywhere.
So if we keep our surroundings clean, it has a Domino effect, and slowly and slowly, the dream
of a clean India becomes a reality. People will start visiting India more and more, which in turn
will create more job opportunities in the hospitality sector and the tourism industry. Through
such initiatives, we can fulfil our duty towards our nation, India. It also helps in achieving the
goal of a $5 trillion economy. Like in every household, we clean our home on Diwali so that
Goddess Lakshmi bestows her blessing on us. Similarly, we must clean our surroundings to
achieve much greater goals.
