Q1. Which ministry started the Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan? Give a brief introduction
on Swach Bharat Abhiyan?
Answer: The aim of the mission is to cover all the rural and urban
areas of the country to present this country as an ideal country before
the world. The mission has targeted aims like eliminating the open
defecation, converting insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets,
eradicating manual scavenging, complete disposal and reuse of solid
and liquid wastes, bringing behavioural changes to people and motivate
health practices, spreading cleanliness awareness among people,
strengthening the cleanliness systems in the urban and rural areas as
well as creating user friendly environment for all private sectors
interested for investing in India for cleanliness maintenance.
This mission has an interesting theme of inviting nine new people by
each and every involved people in the campaign and continuing this
chain until the each and every citizen of India gets involved in this
campaign

In another project under Swachh Bharat initiative, Railways
Ministry has installed 1,25,000 bio-toilets in train coaches. Fitted
under the train lavatories, they prevent human waste from falling
onto the tracks
o Jointly developed by engineers of Indian Railways and
DRDO, these are modern technology mechanisms which
convert human waste into water and gases. Gases are
released into atmosphere and water is discharged onto
tracks
o This initiative will go a long way in improving the hygiene
and cleanliness of railway tracks across the country

The planned target of Swachh Bharat Mission is to make India
100% Open Defecation Free by October 2019. If the project
continues progressing as planned, then by next year, India would
have provided sanitation infrastructure to its entire population. It
would be a huge milestone in resolving one of the large but grass-
root problems affecting India
In another initiative, urban development ministry has
implemented door to door waste collection in some cities so that
residents don’t throw around the garbage in unauthorized places
across the city.
Annual survey of cleanliness and city rankings has been initiated
which motivates city municipalities to compete with each other
and continuously improve their rankings in cleanliness.
Some places of worship in Punjab, Kerala, Rajasthan, Karnataka,
Jharkhand have implemented environment friendly ways to
process flowers and wet waste from kitchens.
In many places, residents have shown an increased awareness,
sense of responsibility and ownership in keeping the
surroundings clean
