Noted: The first ball have fallen down at 52°C at 11 minutes and 10s and
the second ball fall down at 53°C at 11 minutes and 25s.

VI. Conclusion
• After we have finished the experiment in 11 minutes, we get the
value of the bitumen is 52.5°C.
• The softening Point of the bitumen that we have done in this
experiment is not good enough to the standard bitumen which is
softened at 60°C while our data point at 52.5°C.



TP3: Specific gravity

I. Objective
The purpose of this experiment is to define the specific density of the bitumen.
II. Theory
The specific density has shown the proportion of the bitumen at 25 degrees and the
density of water at the same temperature.
III. Equipment and materials

Pycnometer Glass Bitumen sample Bitumen

Balancer Scissor Glycerin and dextrin

IV. Procedure
1. Thoroughly clean, try the pycnometer, and then weigh the cork and pycnometer. It
is defined as a mass “a”.
2. Fill the pycnometer glass with the proper water and then close the cork. Put it
under the water at 25 degrees Celsius for about 30 minutes.
3. Take the pycnometer glass from the tank, wipe out the water around the glass, and
then weigh the pycnometer that contains water again. It is defined as a mass “b”
4. Empty and heat the pycnometer until the pycnometer glass reach 60-70 degrees
Celsius.
