Lab Experiment 6

PRODUCE a Simulink design model of separately excited DC motor and test it.

Objective
To evaluate the MATLAB Simulink design of Separately Excited DC Motor.

MATLAB Simulink: Design of Separately Excited DC motor

Procedure:

1. Click on ‘Simulink’ on MATLAB toolbar and ‘Simulink Library Browser’

window will open.
2. Click on ‘Create a new model’ on Toolbar of ‘Simulink Library Browser’.

3. From ‘Commonly used Block’ in Simulink Library drag ‘Saturation’ block two times,
‘Gain’ block three times and ‘Sum’ block two times onto ‘untitled’ window.
4. Also, from ‘Continuous’ in Simulink Library drag ‘Transfer function’ block two times
onto ‘untitled’ window.
5. In First ‘Saturation’ Block set upper limit=10 and lower limit= -10 by double clicking on
it, as shown in figure below.
6. In Second ‘Saturation’ Block set Upper limit= +4 and Lower limit= -4 by double clicking
on it, as shown in figure below.

7. Change the signs of both ‘Summer’ Block with positive and negative as shown in figure
below.
8. In First ‘Gain’ block, double click and change the gain to 2.
9. In second ‘Gain’ block, double click and change the gain to 0.1.
10. Invert the third ‘Gain’ block, then double click on it and change the gain to 0.1.
11. In first ‘transfer function’ block, change denominator as [l r], as shown in figure below.
12. In second ‘transfer function’ block, change denominator as [j b], as shown in figure
below.

13. Arrange components and connect them as shown in figure below:

14. Select whole diagram leaving input output arrows, as shown in figure below:
15. Right click anywhere on the selected diagram an option of ‘Create Subsystem’ will come,
click it.

16. A window of subsystem will appear as shown below:

17. Manage lines of input and output as shown below:

18. Now give step response at both inputs of the subsystem. Step response can be given from:
Simulink Library → Sources → Step Response.
19. Now give scope at output of the subsystem. Scope can be given from:
Simulink Library → Commonly Used Blocks → Scope.
20. Click Simulation → Configuration parameters. Now set:
Start:0.00 and Stop:15.0
Type: Fixed Step
Fixed step size (fundamental Sample time): 0.001
Click apply and ok.

21. Now click on File → Model properties → Call backs → initfcn → Then on write hand
side write the following values:
l=0.008
r=2
j=0.0004
b= 0.001
Click apply and ok.

22. To run the simulation click ‘play’ button or click Simulation → Start.
23. Double click on scope and then click on ‘Autoscale’ on figure toolbar.
Plot observed:

24. Click on subsystem and then change second block of sum by ++ then click apply and ok.
25. To run the simulation click ‘play’ button or click Simulation → Start.
26. Double click on scope and then click on ‘Autoscale’ on figure toolbar.
Observed Plot:

Post Lab Task:

Implement the following model of DC motor and observe its behavior.
