Core Course - Paper- I
Calculus

UNIT-I. Differential calculus : The real line and its geometrical representation. ε-δ
definitions of limit and continuity. Properties of limit and continuity. Classification of
discontinuities. Uniform continuity. Differentiability and differentials. Successive
differentiation. Leibnitz’s theorem. Rolle’s theorem. Mean value theorems of Langrange and
Cauchy. Statement of Taylor and Maclaurin theorems with Lannge’s and Cauchy’s form
remainder terms. Expansion of functions like
Indeterminate forms.
Statement of LHospital’s rule and its applications.

UNIT-II. Functions of several variables, their limits and continuity. Partial


derivatives, chain rule in partial derivatives. Homogeneous functions. Euler’s theorem on
homogeneous functions and its converse. Maxima and minima of functions of two variables,
stationary points, saddle points. Lagrange’s method of multipliers for determining the
optimum of a function. Jacobian and its property.

UNIT-III. Applications of differential calculus: Tangent, normal, subtangent,


subnormal. Curvature, radius of curvature, different formulae of radius curvature, evolute and
involute, Asymptotes, Concavity, Convexcity, Points of inflexion, Envelopes, Double points-
cusp, node, isolated point.

UNIT-IV. Integral calculus: Reduction formulae, derivations of reduction formulae


for different types of functions. Quadrature. Rectifiability and length of a curve. Arc length
as a parameter. Volumes and surface areas of solids of revolution.

UNIT-I. Complex numbers : De Moivre’s theorem for rational indices and its
applications. Exponential sine, cosine, logarithm of a complex number. Direct and inverse
circular and hyperbolic functions. Expansion of trigonometrcal functions. Gregory’s series.
Summation of series.

UNIT-II. Theory of Equations : Polynomials in one variable and division algorithm.


Relations between the roots and the coefficients. Transformation of equations. Descarte’s rule
of signs. Solution of cubic equations by Cardan’s method. Solution of biquadratic equations
by Euler’s, Descarte’s and Ferrari’s method.

UNIT-III. Matrices : Hermitian and Skew-Hermitian matrices, Orthogonal matrices.


Inverse of a matrix, characterizations of invertible matrices. Rank of a matrix. Row rank =
column rank = rank of the matrix. Rank(A+B) Rank(A) + Rank(B), Rank(AB)
Min(RankA, RankB) (statement only). System of linear equations, consistency and
inconsistency of a system of homogeneous and nonhomogeneous system of linear equations
and their solutions by matrix method. Characteristic Polynomial of a matrix, Characteristic
Equation of a matrix. Eigen values, Eigen Vectors. Statement of Cayley-Hamilton theorem
and its application.

UNIT-IV. Group, semi group, quasi group, properties and examples of groups.
Subgroup, properties and examples of subgroups. Cyclic group and its properties.
