C. MOTIVATION
I will play a video clip, carefully watch the
video because later I will ask some questions
about it. Are you ready?
Yes Sir!
(Video Presentation)

Possible Questions: (Answers may vary)

1. What are the things that you noticed on
the video? The video presented how every chess
piece move on the chess board.
2. What is the equipment needed in
playing chess?
The equipment they used in playing the
chess are chess board, chess piece, chess
clock and note pad&pen for recording the
move they did.
3. Aside from the equipment and number
of players, what are the other things
that you observe?
The players have their different strategy in
playing chess.

D. LESSON PROPER

Now, we will be discussing the chess piece and

their basic movement.

You need to remember each specific moved to

capture an opponent’s piece. This is done by
landing on the square of the opponent’s piece
and replacing it.

Piece can also be moved to defend other pieces

in case of capturing, or to control important
squares in the game.

Let’s start with…

1. The PAWN.

Please read.
The Pawns move forward, but capture
diagonally. They can never move
backwards. On its first move, the pawn

can advance two squares at a time.

Succeeding moves will be one square at a
time.
Thank you!

They are the front lines on the chess board.

They usually move 1 square at a time except
when it still on the second row of the board.
The pawn can move 1 or 2 squares. That move
is called the ‘FIRST MOVE OPTION’ (FMO).

2. The KNIGHT

Please read.
The Knights moves by going two squares
in one direction, and then one more moves
just like an “L” shape. Knights are the
only pieces that can move over other
Thank you! pieces

The Knight moves two squares away from its

original position and a square to its opposite
color and knight can jump over other pieces.

3. The BISHOP

Please read.
The bishop may move as far as it wants,
but only diagonally. Each bishop starts on
one color (light or dark) and must always
stay on that color. Bishops work well
together because they cover up each
other’s weaknesses
Thank you!

The bishop cannot jump over other pieces. It

can capture opponent along its diagonal.

4. The ROOK

TARLAC NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Please read.
The rook may move to any square as far
as it wants, but only forward, backward,
and to the sides. The rooks are particularly
powerful pieces when they are protecting
each other and working together!
Thank you!

The rook cannot jump over other pieces. It

moves along the ranks and files of the board.

5. The QUEEN

Please read.
The queen is the most powerful piece. It
moves in any one straight direction -
forward, backward, sideways, or
diagonally. As all the other pieces except
the knight, it cannot move over any
intervening piece.
Thank you!

The queen has the combined movement of the

rook and the bishop. It is considered as the
most powerful piece.

6. The KING

Please read.
The king is the most important pieces,
however it is considered one of the

weakest. The king only moves one square

in any direction - up, down, to the sides,
and diagonally. The king may never move
himself into check (where he could be
captured)
Thank you!

The king has the simplest move on the board.

It is known as the most valuable chess piece.

Before we end this topic let me share to you

this quotation from Brian Aldiss "However
you envisage your role in life, all you can do is
perform it as best you can”.

As in game chess every chess piece has their

own roles. It depends on how you will perform
the role of each chess piece as its best.

That’s the end of our discussion. Do you have

questions or clarifications toward the topic?
No Sir!

E. GENERALIZATION
To see if you really understood the topic, I
have series of questions that you need to
answer. Get the white board and marker under
your chair. You have 5-second time to reveal
your answer.
Are you all ready?

chess and their moves, we will have an
activity. The title of this activity is “Move like
Piece”.

Direction: Each group will get 3 chess pieces

inside the box. Three members from the group
will wear the chess headdress and perform the
movements of these chess piece on the chess
board.
