CHESS

A boardgame for two players, each

beginning with 16 pieces of six kinds
that are moved according to
individual rules, with the objective
of checkmating the opposing king.
Chess is a game that has been played for
centuries and was thought to have
originated in INDIA in the 15th Century.
Long ago, it was considered a game
reserved only for kings and members of
the upper classes.
The modern design of chess pieces bears the
name of HOWARD STAUNTON, who was an English
master in the mid-1800s. These are the types of
pieces that are now used in all tournaments
worldwide.
LONDON TOURNEY - First international
chess tournament played in 1851.
ADOLF ANDERSSEN - Won the game in
London Tourney tournament. He became
the unofficial best chess player because he
did not receive any award or title.
PAUL MORPHY - First American-born
chess player who traveled to Europe in
the 1850s where he beats all challengers
including Adolf Anderssen. However,
the English champion (Staunton)
refused to play with him, so Murphy
never became a world chess champion.
LONDON 1866 - First official
championship chess tournament. They
used sand clock to restrict the length of
time.
WILHELM STEINITZ - A Bohemian
(Czechoslovakian) Jew who won the
game and became the world's first
official chess champion, holding this
title until 1894.

TERMS USED IN CHESS!
CHECK
• The result of a move that places the
opposing under an immediate threat of
capture by one or sometimes two of the
opponent's pieces.
CASTLING
• A move of the king or either rook of the
same color along the player's first row.
On a player's turn, he may move his king
two squares over to one side and then
move the rook from that side's corner on
the square next to the king.
CHECKMATE
❑ A situation in which one player's
king is threatened with capture (in
check) having no move to avoid that
threat, thus ending the game.

DRAW
❑ A chess game where nobody ends as a
winner.
PROMOTION
❑ A special ability of a pawn wherein
if it reaches the last row of the other
side of the board, it can become any
other chess piece except the king.
KING QUEEN BISHOP KNIGHT ROOK PAWN
The King is the most important piece;
however it is also considered one of the
weakest. The King only moves one square in
any direction- up, down, to the sides, and
diagonally. The King may never move
himself into a check where he could be
captured.
❑ The Queen is the most powerful
piece. It oves in any direction-
forward, backward, sideways, or
diagonal. As all other pieces, except
the knight, it cannot move over any
intervening piece.
❑ The Rook may move to any squae
as far as it wants, but only forwar,
backward, and to the sides. The
rooks are particularly powerful
pieces when they are protecting
each other and working together.
❑ The Bishop may move as far as it wants,
but only diagonally. Each bishop starts on
one color (light or dark) and must always
stay on that color. Bishops work well
together because they cover up each
other's weaknesses.
❑ The Knight moves by going two
squares in one direction, and then
one more move just like an L"
shape. Knights are the only pieces
that can move over the other
pieces.
❑Pawn moves forward but capture
diagonally. It can never move
backwards. On its first move, the pawn
can advance two squares at a time.
Succeeding moves will be one square at
a time.
