OS Layering
OS Layering
These tables can be used to apply Land-Line styling to OS MasterMap. You may wish to do this to help your users adjust to the
new product by visualising it in a familiar way to Land-Line.
There is a table for each of the equivalent feature types in the two products:
• Topographic Lines
• Topographic Points
• Cartographic Text
• Cartographic Symbols
Each table contains the OS MasterMap attributes that describe the feature (in the green columns) and the equivalent Land-Line
feature code (in the blue column). The equivalent OS MasterMap style name is also included.
You can determine the Land-Line style for each OS MasterMap feature by finding its entry within the table, noting the Land-Line
code, then using the Land-Line User Guide to determine the appropriate styling. The Land-Line User Guide can be downloaded
from the Ordnance Survey website:
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/products/landline/pdf/lluserguide.pdf
Looking at the list of features and styling from the Land-Line User Guide shows that 0001 should be styled with a continuous red
line with a weight of 2 (Page 247 – please note that as this chapter is concerned with DXF feature codes are prefixed with G801
and a black background is assumed).
Therefore, if you want to make an OS MasterMap Building outline look like a building outline in Land-Line, this is the styling you
should apply.
Some entries in the table have no feature code associated with them. Some OS MasterMap features, such as Inferred links, have
no equivalent in Land-Line and therefore no equivalent styling.
Polygons may be rendered in a variety of ways. The users, rather than Ordnance Survey, determines how to render the polygon
data within OS MasterMap. Some users are applying a very low level of colour to certain feature types, such as buildings, to supply
some texture to the maps and to start to get people used to the idea of the data being polygonised and the additional functionality
that it will bring in terms of visualising and thematically mapping data. An example is given in the image below, where the buildings
have been given a very light grey render to make them stand out from the rest of the map detail.
