AC to DC Variable Power Supply (0V - 15V)
Object:
Constructing a variable AC to DC power supply capable of delivering an output voltage
ranging from 0 to 15 volts DC.
Introduction:
In modern power systems, the conversion of alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) is
a crucial step. Because AC electricity is simple to generate and can withstand high voltages,
it is frequently used for distribution and transmission. However, many electronic gadgets and
systems require DC power in order for them to function properly. Therefore, in order to
transform incoming AC power into the necessary DC voltage and current levels, the
integration of AC to DC power supply circuits or devices becomes essential.
This report endeavors to comprehensively explore the principles, components, and
functionality of an AC to DC variable power supply (ranging from 0V to 15V). It will
carefully explain different AC to DC conversion techniques, such as filtering and
rectification, and look at each one's benefits.
Theory:
Rectification: AC to DC conversion relies on rectification, where diodes allow current flow
only in one direction. This transforms the oscillating AC waveform into a pulsating DC
waveform. Bridge rectifiers utilize four diodes in a specific configuration to utilize both
halves of the AC waveform, resulting in smoother pulsating DC compared to half-wave
rectification.
Filtering:To further smoothen the pulsating DC output from the rectifier, capacitors are
employed. By charging during voltage peaks and discharging during troughs, capacitors
reduce voltage ripples and produce a more stable DC voltage. This minimizes electrical noise
and interference, ensuring reliable power for sensitive electronic components.
Components:
1. Center-tapped step-down transformer: Reduces the high mains voltage (220V AC) to a
lower AC voltage (15V AC) suitable for further processing.
2. Bridge rectifier: Converts the lower AC voltage from the transformer to pulsating DC.
3. Resistor (150 Ω): Used for voltage dividers and other circuit functions.
4. Adjustable voltage regulator (LM317): Regulates the DC voltage level and allows for
adjusting the output voltage within the desired range (0-15V).

5. Electrolytic capacitors (3300µF, 2.2µF): Smooth the pulsating DC output from the
rectifier.
6. Potentiometer (5k Ω): Controls the adjustable voltage regulator, enabling variable output
voltage adjustments.
7. Digital Voltmeter: Monitors the output voltage level.
8. Additional components: LED, switch, Vero Board, Connecting wires, Power Cable, Casing
etc.
Conclusion:
This report outlines the design and construction of a variable AC to DC power supply capable
of delivering an output voltage between 0 and 15V DC. By understanding the principles of
rectification, filtering, and voltage regulation we made this DC supply capable of giving a DC
Output of (1.2V-15V).
