1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification defines the minimum requirement according to which the manufacturer
shall design, manufacture,
facture, test and supply the cone, basket, Y and T type of Strainers for
removing solid contaminants from the liquid / gaseous stream.
All basket type strainers shall be designed as per ASME BPVC SECTION VIII Div 1 and
others as per ASME B31.3.
2.1 Following codes and standards (latest edition) shall be followed for de
design, fabrication,
testing.
2.2 Editions and addenda (if any) of referred Codes and standards shall be the latest version
valid on the date of award of contract.
2.3 For the sake of simplicity, the initials of the American Society to which the codes are
referred to may be omitted in the specification. For example; B16.5 is a code referring to
ASME; A106 is a standard referring to ASTM

aterial of construction of body and filter element of Strainers shall be as specified in the
Data sheet.
3.3 Ends of ‘T’ Type Strainers shall have thickness as per Data Sheet.
3.4 Generally flanges shall be weld neck R.F, face finish 125 µ Inch AARH and Spiral Wound
Gasket upto 600 class rating. Flanges for class rating 900 and above shall be with end
facing 32 to 63 µ Inch AARH and gasket with RTJ as specified in Data sheet

3.8 Drain and vent connections shall be provided with matching blind cover flanges along with
necessary gaskets, nuts and bolts as per data sheet or respective piping class.
3.9 Pressure parts joined by butt welds shall be with full penetration welds. Where both sides
welding is not accessible, root run by tungsten inert gas process or backing strip, shall be
used to ensure full penetration. Backing strip if used shall be removed after welding.
3.10 Body
ody shall be post weld heat treated, whenever it is required due to
to service requirement or
due to code requirements. Body shall be post weld heat treated as a complete unit and no
welding shall be permitted after the post weld heat treatment is completed. Hardness limit
for weld and HAZ shall be 200 BHN Max. for 5Cr -1/2 Mo Material.
3.11 Allowable pressure drop across the strainer shall be certified by b supplier , Wherever
specified in the Data sheet,, pressure drop calculation shall be furnished.
3.12 For all austenitic stainless steel valves Inter Granular Corrosion ( IGC) test shall be conducted
as per the following :
3.12.1 ASTM A262 Practice "B" with acceptance criteria of "60 mils/year (max.)" for all materials -
forged, rolled, wrought and casting.
Or
ASTM A262 Practice "E" with acceptance criteria of "No cracks as observed from 20X
Magnification" for all materials other than castings. "Microscopic structure to be observed
from 250X magnification" in addition.

3.12.3 For the IGC test as described in Clauses 3.10.1 and 3.10.2.
.2. two sets of samples
sample shall be drawn
from each solution annealing lot. One set shall correspond to the highest Carbon content and
the other to the highest pressure rating. When testing is conducted as per practice "E",
photograph of the microscopic structure shall be submitted
submitte for record.
3.13 All types of 321 or 347 stainless steel valves shall be in a stabilized heat treated condition.
Stabilizing heat treatment shall be carried out subsequent to the normal solution annealing.
Soaking temperature and holding time for stabilizing heat treatment shall be 900°C and 4 hours
respectively.
3.14 Strainers under “NACE” category shall meet the requirement
requirement given in std. NACE MR MR-
0175/ISO 15156.
4.1.1 All carbon steel strainers having wall thickness 9.53 mm and above shall be normalized.
Carbon content shall be limited to .35% max. and silicon .35% max. The normalizing heat
treatment shall be a separate heat treatment operation and
and not a part of the hot forming
operation. Normalizing shall be done after final cold draw pass for all thickness if cold drawn.
4.1.2 All alloy steel (Cr-Mo) strainers shall be normalized and tempered. The normalizing and
tempering shall be a separate heat treatment operation and not a part of the hot forming
operation. The maximum room temperature tensile strength shall be 100,000 psig.
for all carbon steels and alloy steels with wall thickness over 20 mm, Charpy
Charpy-V Notch
impact testing shall be carried out in accordance with paragraph UG-84
UG 84 of ASME BPVC
Section VIII, Div-11 per heat of material and per heat treating batch. Impact test specimen
shall be in accordance with ASTM A370. Impact energies at 0°C shallshall average greater than
27J (20ft-lb)
lb) per set of 3 specimens, with a minimum of 19J (15ft-lb).
(15ft
4.3 For all austenitic stainless steel, the weld deposit shall be checked for ferrite content. A
ferrite number (FN) not less than 3% and not more than 10% is required
required to avoid sigma
phase embrittlement during heat treatment. FN shall be determined by ferritescope prior to
post weld heat treatment.
4.4 Hardness of weld and HAZ shall be 200BHN (max.) for carbon steel and 225 BHN (max.)
for alloy steel.

5.0 INSPECTION
N AND TESTING
5.1 Strainer shall be subjected to stage wise inspection and testing at supplier’s / sub-supplier’s
works by purchaser / its authorized inspection agency. Supplier shall submit Quality
Assurance (QA) Procedures before commencement of fabrication. Approved QA procedures
shall form the basis for strainer inspection.
5.2 Testing at supplier ’s works shall include but not limited to the following :
• Non destructive tests such as radiography, dye penetration tests as per data sheet.
• All strainers shall be hydrostatically tested at 1.5 times of maximum working pressure.
6.1 All exposed carbon steel parts to be painted shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove scale, rust,
dirt and other foreign materials by wire brushing and sand blasting as applicable. Minimum
acceptable standard in case of power tool cleaning shall be ST.3
S 3 and in case of blast cleaning
shall be Sa 2 ½ as per Swedish
Swed Standard SIS-05-5900.
6.2 Non-ferrous
ferrous materials, austenitic stainless steels, plastic or plastic coated materials, insulated
surface of strainer and pre--painted items shall not be painted.
6.3 Stainless steel surface, both inside and outside, shall be pickled
pickled and passivated.
6.4 Machined and bearing surface shall be protected with rust preventive agent like varnish or
thick coat of grease.
6.5 All strainers shall be painted in accordance with specification for painting..
6.6 The color of finish coat shall be intimated to the supplier after placement oof order.
7.1 All packaging shall be done in such a manner so as to reduce the volume.
7.2 Accessories, spare parts of the strainer and small items shall be packed separately in wooden-
wooden
cases. Each item shall be appropriately tagged with identification of main strainer, item
description and reference number of the respective assembly drawing.
New Delhi
Sheet 7 of 9

7.3 Detailed packing list in waterproof envelope shall be inserted in the package together with
strainer.
7.4 Each strainer shall have an identification plate giving salient strainer data, make, year of
manufacture, strainer number, name of manufacturer etc.
8.1 Supplier shall submit recommended list of spare parts with recommended quantities and
itemized prices for first two years of operation of the strainer.. Proper coding and referencing
of spare parts shall be done so that later identification with appropriate strainer will be
facilitated.
8.2 Recommended spares shall be limited to baskets (s) and gasket (s) / O-Rings
O Rings only.
