1 INTRODUCTION

1.1. About
SITA eWAS is a full weather service that provides in real time weather observation, nowcasts and forecasts during all the
phases of your flight. It offers the possibility to review the current weather situation almost in real time and presents how it
would evolve in the coming hours. Installed in your EFB the application gets the weather forecast using IP or ACARS
communication and the avionic data as position and speed directly from the A429 bus. A pre-flight version is also available on
iPad so that you can directly review the weather condition along your flight directly from the airport or the hotel.

SITA eWAS system is formed basically by a terminal (connected EFB or iPad) and a ground segment that collects the weather
forecasts from several weather providers and optimizes all the information to reduce the data size to uplink to the aircraft.

1.2. What’s new in SITA eWAS 3.6?

SITA eWAS 3.6 has a set of new features. We encourage you to review them in this manual to get a better understanding of
them. These are the release notes of SITA eWAS v3.6.

1.2.1. New features

o SIGMET Filtering: SIGMET data now has its own button in the Control panel, filtering it separately from the other
weather hazards.
o Spider tool improvements: The Spider tool has been improved by adding new filtering options such as the definition
of the circles by time or distance and the color of the spider legs according to the airport type. Airports with medical
services available now have an H icon on it to increase the situational awareness of pilots.
o New display filtering options: Display Filters introduces new filtering options on Tools and RoseGrid.
o Adequate ETOPs circles improvements: Improvement of the Adequate ETOPS circles visualization by introducing a
new display mode: Spider. This mode displays the circles of the airports according to Spider legs, increasing
situational awareness of flight crews by reducing the amount of circles drawn over the map and keeping the focus on
the nearest ones.

2.4. Legend
The legend panel describes the colors and icons used to represent weather phenomenon. As you can see, they are closely
related to the type of phenomenon and its severity. It is intended by SITA eWAS application to assign the same color/icon to
the same hazard regardless of the weather provider or product. It is always available via the Menu Panel.

2.5. Weather Object Selection

When tapping over a weather object (Forecast or Observation) in both, Map and Vertical Display, a pop-up dialog appears
showing detailed information related to this object. The information shown depends on the weather object selected. These
are some of the parameters available:
• Hazard (*): Description of the weather hazard, including phenomenon type and severity.
• Altitude (*): altitude range in FL where this object is located.
• Valid from/until: period time when this object is considered as valid (Only for Weather Forecasts).
• Obs. Time (*): this time corresponds with the moment this weather object was observed by the sensors (Only for
Weather Observations)

The weather object selected is highlighted with a contour white line in both, Map and Vertical Display.
When more than one weather object is found at the coordinates selected, a list of weather objects sorted by FL is shown on a
slider panel. Swipe right/left to move along the list.

2.6. Split view Mode

SITA eWAS supports multitasking in iPads with Split View capabilities. To use this the other app that will share the screen
must also have Split View capabilities. To use SITA eWAS in Split View, simply slide up the iPad dock from the bottom and
drag the app from the dock to the left or right side of the tablet. Then, adjust the size of the apps with the grey button in
between them.

When the width of SITA eWAS becomes too small, it will switch the graphical interface to one more adequate (which is the
same format as in the iPhone version).

In this case, the control panel is at the bottom of the app. The various options can be shown or hidden by dragging it up and
down. In this mode, the Flight Plan Manager is not available.

The Windows version does not have the concept of Split View as in iOS. But SITA eWAS windows version screen size can be
changed (using windows key or resizing it manually), allowing the user to work with multiple applications in the same view.

3 FLIGHT PLANS
3.1. Loading Flight plans
The SITA eWAS application provides a specific panel that allows crew to request, create, modify, and activate a flight plan and
requesting a mission.

3.1.1. OFP (of an Airline)

This feature is only available for Airlines which have an extended integration. It behaves the same way as the Eurocontrol
tab. Please refer to section 19.2 for more info.

3.1.2. ATC FPL

 NOTE: Only flights filed in Eurocontrol or FAA can be requested.

This tab allows to request a list of flights by introducing the airline (Only ICAO Code) or the departure airport (ICAO/IATA
code) or the destination airport (ICAO/IATA code) or any combination of three. Characters in lower case will be read as
upper case.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 18 of 106

The button allows to swap the departure and destination
airports.

The icon indicates when the departure time of a flight is prior

to the current time.

Note that the flights found with your ICAO/IATA code are
presented in a list, including its Flight Identifier, From (Airport),
To (Airport), and Standard Departure time.

A flight can be selected by tapping on the desired flight. The

downloaded flight plan data details are shown automatically.
Once you selected a Flight Path, tap on the accept button to
activate the flight plan. When a Flight Plan is activated, a list of
Airports along this flight plan is downloaded automatically.

3.1.3. Manual
This tab allows to request a flight plan by introducing manually the route. There are different options:
- Request a route using a valid Eurocontrol Flight Identifier.

i.e.: AFR006, BAW287, etc.

- Request a route using only departure and destination ICAO/IATA airports.

i.e.: CDG JFK, LFPG KJFK, etc.

3.1.4. Latest

This tab presents a list of the latest flight plans downloaded. All
flights downloaded by previous features, Request Flight and
Request Route, are stored on a local database and are accessible
for further use, including the airports. This is very useful for
pilots, because they can download all their flights at the
beginning of the day when a good internet connection is
available. Because all the required data of a flight is stored locally,
pilots can activate it throughout the day, without having an
internet connection. A flight can be activated by tapping on the
desired flight.

The icon indicates when the departure time of a flight is prior

to the current time.

3.1.5. Activating the Flight Plan

After tapping on a Flight Plan in Eurocontrol or OFP, it will be

downloaded and the details of the Flight Plan will appear,
including the departure time and date, the flight number and the
OFP version for those that have it. Clicking on Activate will close
the Flight Plans panel and load the new Flight Plan. Press Cancel
to go back to the panel.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 20 of 106

3.2. Active Flight Plan panel
Some of the details that define the active Flight Plan can be seen and edited by opening the Active Flight Plan panel. Please
refer to section 6.1 for further information.

The name appearing on the slider is the Flight Number, and when tapping on it the panel opens. The panel provides general
information about the flight: origin and destination airports, take-off date and time and the aircraft type. The ATC Flight Plan
Route is also provided and, by tapping on, it will be copied into the clipboard.

3.2.1. Edit Flight Plan details

In this panel, the following values can be edited by tapping on the corresponding field:

- Departure Time
- Taxi Time
- Flight Duration
When the Flight Duration parameter is modified, the increase/decrease is automatically applied to all the waypoints
of the flight plan. IMPORTANT: No A/C performance data is applied on these calculations.
- Average Cruise Flight Level
The Average Cruise FL is a pondered average of all the flat sections of the Flight Plan. When the Average Cruise FL is
modified, the increase/decrease is automatically applied to all sections. IMPORTANT: No A/C performance data is
applied on these calculations.

The changes can be saved or discarded. Changing the departure and taxi time might change the operational mode from
briefing to inflight or vice versa if any of those modes is active. Before saving the changes, the mode that will become active
appears below the resulting take-off time. More information on the operational modes in section 6.1.

3.2.2. Flight Plan graphical edition

[*Only Available for iOS version]

Tapping on the button will enter the Flight Plan graphical edition.
This tool allows to edit the flight plan manually by moving, adding and deleting waypoints directly on the map.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 21 of 106

Tap on a waypoint to select it, which will display a menu with several options: do a direct to, edit the waypoint or delete the
waypoint. Note that a waypoint cannot be edited without having previously moved it.

To move a waypoint keep pressing on it and drag the waypoint on the screen.

Keep pressing on a line that links two waypoints will create a new waypoint between them.

Through the edit waypoint tool, the name, latitude and longitude of the waypoint can be modified.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 22 of 106

NOTE: Original waypoints of the flight plan cannot be edited. Edition is only allowed on new created waypoints or moved
waypoints.

The Direct to tool allows to create a direct path between two waypoints, removing all the waypoints between them.

Direct-From tool allows the user to trace a direct path between the current location of the aircraft to a waypoint, removing
all the waypoints between them.

To do so, select the destination waypoint, choose Direct-From icon in the contextual menu.
A new waypoint is automatically created at the aircraft position and the trajectory is shown.
Validate the action to proceed.

To leave the flight plan edition tap the cross to cancel changes or tap the check icon to save changes.

6 OPERATION MODES

The SITA eWAS application offers two display modes selectable from the control menu:
“Briefing/Inflight” mode and “TimeView mode”.

6.1. Briefing/Inflight Mode

The Briefing/Inflight mode is the main mode of operation of SITA eWAS. When activating the Briefing/Inflight mode, the app
will automatically set which of the two modes must be applied, according to the take-off time. If the current time is before
the take-off time, the Briefing mode is activated. If the current time is after the take-off time, the Inflight mode is activated. If
when in Briefing mode the take-off time is reached, then the app will automatically switch to Inflight mode.

The take-off time can be changed when in this mode via the Active Flight Plan panel. Please check 3.1.5 for further
information.

6.1.1. Briefing/Inflight Timeline bar

The Briefing/Inflight timeline bar is fully integrated in the Map/Navigation and Vertical Display. Using tap and drag gestures it
can be possible to select a different time in the future. By taping on the timeline area previous to the current A/C position,
the timeline is reset.

The SITA eWAS application provides the expected position of the aircraft for the selected daytime and shows the
corresponding weather conditions, in both displays. The timeline bar is integrated into the Vertical Display and allows the
crew to see which are the expected weather conditions during the flight according to the take-off time.

The timeline bar provides the following information:

- Expected Aircraft Position (Ghost Aircraft, in white) for the selected time in both displays (Map/Navigation and
Vertical Displays).
- Selected time in both displays (Map/Navigation and Vertical Displays).

There is a play/pause button to automatically animate the ghost aircraft through the flight plan. After 30s in pause mode, the
timeline is automatically stopped and SITA eWAS application returns to the current time situation.

the cruise speed is an average speed throughout the flight. In this case, the A/C
can be pointed on the fligh t plan by a lo ng tap (more than 3 seconds) on the
vertical profile. The plane is moved at the indicated location and resumes its
progress at the speed of the flight plan.

6.1.3.1. FMS Simulator

The calculation of the expected aircraft position (Ghost Aircraft) for a given time is performed by a simple FMS Simulator
integrated into SITA eWAS App. This FMS Simulator calculates the altitude and estimated-time-over at each waypoint. To do
that, it takes into account the cruise speed/altitude and any change on speed/altitude during the flight. But it does not take
into account either the wind direction/speed or the aircraft type dynamics.

6.1.3.2. GPS Positioning

[*Only Available for iOS version]

 Using the GPS Positioning in SITA eWAS is not currently allowed by the
authorities. Use it at your own discretion.

SITA eWAS is capable of retrieving GPS location from the device and place properly
the aircraft into the map and vertical display. To do this, GPS option must be selected
in the Settings Dialog. You will see in the top-left panel that the indicator: GPS
Enabled.
When the GPS positioning is working properly, there is no Aircraft icon displayed in
the map. Instead, there is a 20 NM circle in the area where the AC is. If the GPS is
active but no valid position is received or position is not refreshed in 5 seconds, the
yellow aircraft will appear and the left panel will indicate that the position is being
simulated. Once the signal is recovered, the yellow circle will appear again.
In this mode, the Left-side panel will not show any A/C Position related data to follow
EASA requirements.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 33 of 106

In the vertical view, the yellow AC will not be displayed if the GPS position indicates it is further than a 100 NM from the
active flight plan.

6.1.3.3. AID Positioning

SITA eWAS application can be configured to retrieve the A/C position directly from the avionics through a selectable AID.
Currently the following AIDs are supported:
- A350,
- Teledyne,
- Any ADBP-834 compatible AID (like FOMAX).
The list of AIDs and the connection settings can be configured from the server side depending on the airline and user profile.
Please contact SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk for more information.

When an AID is selected and a valid position is received, there is no Aircraft displayed in the map. Instead, there is a 20 NM
circle in the area where the AC is. If the AID connection is active but there is an error, no valid position is received or position
is not refreshed in 5 seconds, the yellow aircraft will appear, and the left panel will indicate which is the error and he position
is being simulated. Once the position is valid again, the yellow circle will appear again.

In this mode, the Left-side panel will not show any A/C Position related data to follow EASA requirements.
In the vertical view, the yellow AC will not be displayed if the GPS position indicates it is further than a 100 NM from the
active flight plan.

7.1. Airport Types
The SITA eWAS application can represent on the map all the important airports associated to the current flight plan and
those requested manually by the pilot.
There are different types of airports:
Regulatory airports,
which include the departure, the destination, primary alternate destination and suitable ETOPs airports.
METAR/TAF is downloaded automatically for these airports when a new flight plan is requested
En-route airports,
For airlines not integrating A633 OFPs (Please refer to section 19.2 for details), include the most significant
airports in a configurable-width corridor (by default, 50NM) around the flight plan. METAR/TAF is downloaded
automatically for these airports when a new flight plan is requested
For airlines integrating A633 OFPs, include the en-route airports extracted from the A633 OFP. METAR/TAF is
downloaded automatically for these airports when a new flight plan is requested

The airports which are downloaded manually by the pilot, using the Airports tool (Please refer to section 4 more details) are
considered as En-Route airports.

Those companies that have integrated in their solution an Airports Complex File (Please refer to section 19.4 for more
details) will also see:
Adequate airports,
which include airports from the Airport Sheet which are included in a configurable-width corridor (by
default, 400NM) around the flight plan, that are identify as adequate for landing. METAR/TAF and
NOTAM/SNOWTAM info is only downloaded by request.
Emergency airports,
which include airports from the Airport Sheet which are in a configurable-width corridor (by default,

13 TOOLS
SITA eWAS contains a set of tools which can be layered up and combined.

- Effective Wind: Calculate the effective wind to a specific point.

- Equitime Point: Calculate the equitime point on your route for the provided two airports.

- Airport Circles: Show the range from the selected airports at a certain distance or speed/time
combination.

- Distance: Calculate distance between two given points.

- Draw: Draw anything on the map.

- Spider: Visualize the closest airports to the aircraft.

Each tool generates one layer over the map with the data. To show and hide all the active
layers, you can tap on the TOOLS button on the vertical bar, as with the Forecast/Observations.
You can also individually select which layers you want to see in Filters->Display. Please view
section 14.4 for more information on this.

Some tools have editors to set them up. You can access the editors by tapping on the plus icon that sits at the on the bottom-

left of the map . After pressing it, a bar with access to the different editors will open. If one of the tools already have
data set-up, it will appear highlighted, as follows:

When entering a tool editor, you will see a panel on top of the map, indicating the options of using such tool. Tapping on the

trash icon will remove any data for that tool. Tapping on the close button will save the current state of the tool.

IMPORTANT: When editing a tool, the tool will be visible. When closing the tool editor, if the TOOLS button on the menu is
off and/or the layer is off in the Filters, the tool will be hidden. Activate the layer to view it again with the TOOLS button
and/or the Filters menu.

13.1. Effective Wind
It is possible to compute the average accumulated wind between aircraft position and any position selected on map.
This calculation can be done without having the winds view selected to avoid display cluttering. To get this
calculation, click on “Effective Wind” button and select a position on map (it should be inside the weather area
retrieved). The following image shows the outcome:

The format of the text is as follows:

“[Average Wind Component] ([Distance from AC to Point NM or Time in MIN])”.

The wind component indicates whether it is headwind (H) or tail wind (T). If the point selected is on an airport, the airport
will be highlighted with a white circle. If the ghost aircraft is active, the calculation will be computed from it. The color of the
line indicates the AVG WC speed too following the same scheme as the winds.

This option is not available under Timeview Mode nor Stations View mode.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 63 of 106

13.2. Equitime point calculation
This tool helps you to determine the equitime point (or points), which is the location on the flight plan where two
distinct points you've chosen on the map are reached by the aircraft in the exact same amount of time while
accounting for the effective wind (if those points are in the Winds area). There can be more than one Equitime Point or no
Equitime Point at all.

When in Inflight mode, the Equitime Point is calculated from the AC until the end of the route. When in Briefing mode, the
Equitime Point is always calculated in all the route. The points are selected by activating the mode and tapping on the map in
two different points. If the point selected is on an airport, the airport will be highlighted with a white circle.

There are three possible scenarios:

One equitime point

• At the equitime point label:
o “[UTC Time of Arrival] ([Distance from AC to the equitime point] NM) ([latitude] , [longitude])”.
o E.g.: “16:08Z (463 NM) (W05023.2 , N6259.1)”
• At the selected points labels :
o “[Average Wind Component] ([Distance from Equitime Point to that point] NM)”.
o E.g.: “H019KT (661 NM)”. Each point has a different label color to indicate the part of the route that is closer
to this point.
• Over the route: dashed lines with the color showing to which point is faster to get to from that zone of the route.

More than one equitime point

• At the equitime point labels: A prefix “ETP[Number of Equitime Point]: ”, where the number will be increasing as the
route goes.
• At the selected points, as many labels as equitime points will appear, with a matching prefix “ETP[Number of
Equitime Point]: ”.
• Over the route, the lines will alternate the colors showing to which of the two points is faster to get to from that zone
of the route.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 64 of 106

No equitime point
• At the selected points, a label indicating “NO ETP” will appear. This means that there is one of the two points that is
always faster to get to from the whole remaining route. This point is indicated by adding to the label of that point the
average wind component and the distance from the AC, e.g: “NO ETP – T014KT (890 NM)”.

In the case there are no winds available to calculate the equitime point (e.g: the selected point is outside the area of winds),
the equitime point is obtained without winds. This is indicated by displaying “NO AVG WC AVAIL” instead of the average wind
component.

This option is not available in Timeview Mode nor Stations View Mode.

13.3. Airport Circles

This tool allows to set a circle around an airport using distance or speed and time as parameters. Simply tap on an
airport to add the circle around it. Tapping again on the same airport will remove the circle. You can set as many
airports as desired.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 65 of 106

You can select that the circle is drawn with a certain radius as per distance (in nautical miles -NM-, or as per time at a certain
speed (time in minutes and speed in knots).

13.4. Distances
This tool allows to calculate the distance between 2 points in NM. Simply press two points on the screen to be
pinned and the distance is calculated. You can draw up to 5 distances simultaneously. Tap on the distance label to
remove a distance.

enter the draw tool panel. The Brush selector allows the user start painting and the Brush Options selector to choose
the stroke size and brush color (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). Use your finger to draw lines.
The undo button removes the last line drawn and the eraser removes the selected draws by the user. To move around the
map without drawing, click on the Move over map button.
Tapping on the trash button deletes all the drawings and the close button saves the drawings and closes the Draw panel.

13.6. Spider (or Closest airports tool)
The Spider feature shows the closest airports to the current position of the aircraft. It draws a segmented line between the
airports and the aircraft. On top of each airport a line appears as in effective wind, indicating the distance and the effective
wind to that airport. The color of the line also represents the averaged wind component as in effective wind. If the ghost
aircraft is active, it will show the closest airports to the ghost aircraft.

You can set up the number of airports in the Filters->Display section.

Refer to Filter section to know the different display possibilities (Tools).

17 REPLAY MODE
[*Only Available for iOS version]

17.1. Introduction
The replay mode allows debriefing past flights with the weather available at the time of the flight within the last 90 days.

Currently, the replay mode only allows to review the forecast and observations data.
Airports and Winds will be added in future v ersions

17.2. Activating the replay mode

To activate the replay mode, you need to log in with a user with a specific replay profile. Please contact us for help setting up
the users. Note that a user cannot have two different profiles at the same time.

17.3. Entering the replay flight scenario

Upon log in with a user that has a replay profile, the screen will look very
similar to the normal operations mode. To enter and activate a flight scenario

to be replayed, tap on the OFP button and the flight data panel will
open. There you can input the following information:

• ATC Route: Standard ICAO Route or ATC Filing strip of the flight to be
reviewed
• Analysis time: select the time to start the simulation. Usually, this time
is set some time before the takeoff, to show the data available during
the briefing time.
• Takeoff time: the time at which the flight departed.

Tapping on Activate Route will activate the flight simulation.

 USE TRICK 1: If you want to analyze the data from a certain section of your
flight, you can put an analysis time later than the takeoff time. This way, it will
automatically place the flight at the estimated positio n depending on the takeoff
time.

17.4. Replaying a flight

Once the flight is activated, you will see the route and the different weather hazards depending on the filters you have
activated. A new panel will appear to control the simulation, with three buttons:

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 86 of 106

• Restart simulation : This reset the position of the AC back to the initial analysis time.

• Play/Pause : This will start or stop the replay of the flight, simulating how time goes by. When it is paused, it will
display the weather that was available at the current time. This time can be seen on the top right information panel

• Replay speed: This allows to control how many seconds of the flight go by for every second in real time. Tapping on it
will change the replay speed. The available speeds are: 1x, 5x,10x,30x,60x and 90x.

By default, the replay is stopped when activating a new flight. This means that the weather that appears is the weather that
was available in eWAS at the Analysis Time (or at the time it is stopped). You can use the ghost aircraft to project the aircraft
as in the normal operational mode.

You can also access the Flight tab to change the cruise flight level and the
duration of your flight to make it as accurate as possible. The departure
and taxi time is calculated from the takeoff time. A default taxi time of 10
min is used for the purpose of the replays.

18.2.3. In-Flight Icing Forecasts

Description Symbol and Color code

Icing conditions are atmospheric conditions that may lead to the formation

of ice on the surface of the aircraft. Inflight airframe icing occurs when
super-cooled water freezes on impact with any part of the external structure Severe
of an aircraft during flight. Although the nominal freezing point of water is
0°C, water in the atmosphere does not always freeze at that temperature Moderate
and often exists as a super-cooled liquid.
The In-Flight Icing Forecasts are normally calculated at specific hours,
applying Numerical Weather Prediction Models for a concrete region or
globally. The result is a set of +1h/+3h forecasts for the next 18/36 hours
and for different altitude levels (4D information).

18.2.4. Surface Fronts

Description Symbol code
A weather front is a boundary separating bands of thunderstorms and severe
weather and may on occasion be preceded by squall lines or dry lines. Warm fronts
are usually preceded by stratiform precipitation and fog. The weather usually clears
quickly after a front's passage. Some fronts produce no precipitation and little
cloudiness, although there is invariably a wind shift.

Surface Fronts Forecasts are normally calculated at specific hours, applying

Numerical Weather Prediction Models for a concrete region or globally. The result is
a set of +3h forecasts for the next 18 hours.

18.2.5. Cb Top Forecasts

Description Symbol and Color code
Cb Top represents a special category of clouds with a significant vertical

RDT algorithms automatically define a temperature threshold for each cloud-

system which allows users to identify the base of towering clouds: “bottom
of tower” level. Depending on system morphology, an additional outline
with a temperature threshold more representative of the top of the tower
may complete the RDT description: “top of tower”
RDT algorithms analyze the overlapping cells between two consecutive slots
and take into account splits and merges. Thus, RDT provides a displacement
diagnosis for each cloud system. Tracking is applied to any cloud system
regardless of the base of tower threshold.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 93 of 106

The diagnosis allows to distinguish convective systems from the whole sample. The diagnoses rely on statistical rules taking
into account the various characteristics of the different cells. 1% of cloud system is diagnosed as convective in average over
Europe, 10% over Africa. Displacement diagnosis allows cell extrapolation up to 1 hour, with updates every 15 minutes or 30
minutes.

18.3.3. Lightning Strike Cells

Lightning Strike Cells products are obtained by applying classification algorithms to the lightning
impacts to identify the violent convective cells. Afterwards, by the usage of tracking algorithms, the
movement of the convective cells is calculated. Displacement diagnosis allows cell extrapolation up to 1
hour with updates every 5.

In SITA eWAS, the lightnings are shown with a color scheme indicating how old is the data, ranging from
between 5-20 mins (most recent) to 25-40 mins (oldest).

18.3.4. PIREPs
Description Symbol and Color code
A PIREP (Pilot Report) is a report of actual weather conditions

18.3.6. Ice Crystals

Description Symbol and Color code
Ice crystals are formed when high concentrations of moisture are lifted
by strong convective weather, such as thunderstorms, and then
freeze. The size of these crystals is small enough for being unnoticed
by the on-board weather radar. These crystals may affect an engine
when flying through convective weather, potentially producing several
engine power-loss and damage events. They must not be confused
with icing conditions, which usually occur in lower altitudes.

18.6. Airport Operational Data
18.6.1. METAR/TAF
METAR and TAF are formats for reporting weather information.
METARs typically come from airports or permanent weather
observation stations. Reports are generated once an hour or half-
hour, but if conditions change significantly, a report known as a
special (SPECI) may be issued.

TAFs are issued every six hours for major civil airfields: 00h, 06h,
12h, 18h UTC, and generally apply to a 24- or 36-hour period, and
an area within approximately five statute miles from the center of
an airport.

18.6.2. NOTAMs
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is a notice filed with an aviation authority
to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a
location that could affect the safety of the flight. NOTAMs are sorted
showing the latest NOTAM on top, first by year and then by higher to
lower NOTAM number.

The format of a NOTAM is as follow:

NOTAM ID
Q-CODE description
Valid from _ to _
Last Modification Time
NOTAM Text.

18.6.3. SNOWTAMs
A SNOWTAM is as a special series NOTAM notifying the presence,
or removal, of hazardous conditions due to snow, ice, slush or
standing water associated with snow, slush and ice on the
movement area.

The format of a SNOWTAM is as follow:

NOTAM ID
SNOWTAM
Valid from _ to _
Last Modification Time
NOTAM Text.

18.6.4. D-ATIS
The Automatic Terminal Information Service, or ATIS, is a
continuous broadcast of recorded aeronautical
information in busier terminal areas, i.e. airports and
their immediate surroundings. ATIS broadcasts contain
essential information, such as current weather

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 97 of 106

information, active runways, available approaches, and any other information required by the pilots, such as important
NOTAMs. Pilots usually listen to an available ATIS broadcast before contacting the local control unit, which reduces the
controllers' workload and relieves frequency congestion. D-ATIS is a text-based, digitally transmitted version of the ATIS
audio broadcast. It is accessed via a data link service such as the ACARS and displayed on an electronic display in the aircraft.

D-ATIS reports are generated once an hour or half-hour and are only available for the most important North America
airports.

18.6.5. Airport Info

SITA eWAS provides the following information about the Flight Plan
airports, or any desired airport:
• Airport type: Departure, Destination, Alternative, En-Route,
Adequate or Emergency.
• Airport class: Airport class from 0 – 3.
• Latitude, Longitude and Elevation.
• IFR Capabilities.
• Medical info free text to add relevant medical information.
More information on how to add this data at the 19.4 section.
• Sunrise & Sunset GMT times.
• Most relevant Frequencies (TWR / D-ATIS)
• Runways, including:
o Identification
o Dimensions
o Elevation
o Bearing
o Approaches systems & categories

19 ANNEX 2: AIRLINE EXTENDED INTEGRATION
[*Only Available for iPhone/iPad]

For any airline, SITA eWAS app can extend previous functionalities using operational data. This operational data must
include:
- Airport Sheet: Table of adequate and emergency airports (classified by A/C type) that can be usable by the airline.
- Airport Minimum Criteria Sheet: Table of the default ceiling and visibility thresholds applied to all airport
METAR/TAF analysis. It is also possible to set specific values per airport.
- OFP Files: Operation Flight Plan files provided by the Flight Management System containing operational information
for each flight.
- Company Areas: Company Areas is a product that allows to share areas between Dispatchers and Pilots of the same
Airline. This product is only available for those airlines that has previously integrated SITA Mission Watch solution.
- SITA OptiFlight Messages: Only for those airlines that have integrated SITA-Optiflight.

19.1. Request a Mission

When SITA eWAS Platform has access to operational data, the SITA eWAS app can be execute a specific URL Scheme to
request for a Mission identified by the flight number, the departure and destination airports, the departure date and the OFP
version.
The mission bundle retrieved is composed by the flight plan (including ETA for each waypoint), the list of airports (including
departure, destination, alternate destination, alternate en-route and ETOPs) and the different weather forecasts/observation
for the time of the flight.

SITA eWAS v3.6 iOS and Windows User Guide 99 of 106

The SITA eWAS Platform uses the Airport Sheet and OFP files to create the Mission bundle.

The main idea behind mission bundles is for the user to upload their flights from the SITA eWAS cloud in advance (when
3G/4G/WiFi connection is available) and then retrieve them at any time from the SITA eWAS app, so the user won’t need to
input the flight plan manually. Nevertheless, the user can also retrieve a mission for a flight plan obtained from Eurocontrol,
which will get the flight plan according to Eurocontrol plus a default list of alternative airports customized for the given flight
plan and the forecasted weather for the time of the flight.

To request a mission you could either fill the Eurocontrol flight number in the Flight Number field and the departure date or,
mandatorily, the OFP Version of the Flight Plan, the Flight Plan number, the departure and destination airport in ICAO or IATA
format and the departure date.

If a mission has been successfully retrieved, the mission bundle is stored locally and the SITA eWAS app is started
automatically in Briefing Mode with all the information retrieved from the ground. When a mission bundle for a specific
mission has been stored locally, the SITA eWAS app is started automatically using the information available.

19.2. <Airline> OFP

When SITA eWAS Platform has access to operational data, a new <Airline> OFP
tab is added to the Flight Plan Request dialog (Please refer to section 3 for
further details). The request can be done by either introducing both the
departure (ICAO/IATA code) and destination (ICAO/IATA code) airports, one of
them or none at all. Lower case characters will be treated as upper case.
The button allows to swap the departure and destination airports.

The flights found are presented in a list, including its Flight Identifier, From
(Airport), To (Airport) and Departure time. A flight can be selected by tapping
on the desired flight. The downloaded flight plan data details are shown
automatically. Tap on accept button to activate the flight plan. When activates
a Flight Plan, a list of Airports along this flight plan are downloaded
automatically.
The icon indicates when the departure time of a flight is prior to the current time.

19.3. FMS Simulator

The FMS Simulator uses the Estimated Time of Arrival of each waypoint obtained from the OFP file to estimate more
precisely the A/C position at Inflight and Briefing modes, and when the timeline bar is activated.

19.4. <Airline> Airports

Airlines have the option to provide an Airport File with the list of operational airports. Depending on the information
provided, the application behaves differently (Please refer to section 7.1 for further details).
The following table summarizes the behavior:

20 ANNEX 3: EFB SYSTEM INTEGRATION

20.1. Connection to Avionics

One of the most interesting features provided by the SITA eWAS-Pilot app is the connectivity with different EFB Platforms
available in the market, like navAero, Teledyne, A350, FOMAX and/or Esterline CMC Electronics.

In all these cases, the application is able to retrieve relevant aircraft and flight information directly from avionics buses,
including parameters like Longitude, Latitude, BaroAltitude, Ground Speed, True Heading, A/C Registration and/or ATC
Callsign.

The pilot can select the AID from the Profile Settings tab (Please refer to section 16.6.3). The list of AIDs and the connection
settings can be configured from the server side depending on the airline and user profile. Please contact SITA’s Enterprise
Service Desk if you are interested.

20.2. ACARS/MIAM Capacity

SITA eWAS with SITAONAIR AIRCOM Network Service provides the capacity to update weather information in-flight using
ACARS/MIAM narrowband datalinks for long haul flights.

This ACARS/MIAM capacity was confirmed in March 2016 directly in an aircraft at the CDG air-shed and in SITAONAIR Labs
for different datalinks: VDL2, POA and Immarsat.

The following figure shows the architecture of the SITA eWAS Service when using ACARS/MIAM Connection on an
EFB System:

When a narrowband MIAM/ACARS connection (VDL/POA/Immarsat) is available, that is in-flight phase; the SITA
eWAS Application applies automatically a Low Profile with some advanced filtering features which reduces
drastically the payload size:

1. Only observation products are updated: Convection, Ice Crystal, Lightning Cells and PIREPs

2. The update rate of observation products is increased to 1 hour

3. The area and time of interest for refreshing weather data is reduced

Instead of covering a square around the flight plan, for any weather refresh during the flight, a smaller area of
interest is applied. This new area of interest is calculated taking into account the following parameters:
- Back point, ½ hour behind the current A/C position according to the active flight plan, or 320NM, if aircraft is not
yet ½ hour further from the origin airport.
- Front point, 2 hours ahead the current A/C position according to the active flight plan, or 960NM further from
the destination airport if time to arrival is less than 2 hours.
- Corridor width at back point is 320NM
- Corridor width at front point is 960NM

4. The payload size never exceeds the maximum allowed

The SITA Ground Services never send packages which exceed the maximum payload size allowed. This
maximum size depends on the datalink used (VDL2, POA or Inmarsat) and has been calculated in order to
have acceptable response times (See table below).

Datalink Max. Payload Size Response Time

VDL2 25 Kbits 01:45 minutes
POA 15 Kbits 01:45 minutes
Inmarsat 15 Kbits 01:45 minutes

To keep the observation data UP TO DATE with a minimum rate of 1 hour within the very restrictive area around the
Aircraft, an average of 32Kbits/hour are required.

Please contact SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk if you are interested.

20.3. Paired Mode

When Paired Mode is enabled, all the instances of the SITA eWAS Application that works at the same sub-network,
automatically create an SITA eWAS cluster.

In the cluster:

- One of the instances acts as a Master, requesting weather data and flight plans from SITA Ground Services

- The rest of instances act as Slaves, requesting weather data and active flight plan directly to the Master.

In summary, there is only one instance that is consuming data (3G / 4G / Satcom / ACARS) and then shares the updated
weather data with the rest of the instances.

Please contact SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk if you are interested.
