1.1. About
SITA eWAS is a full weather service that provides in real time weather observation, nowcasts and forecasts during all the
phases of your flight. It offers the possibility to review the current weather situation almost in real time and presents how it
would evolve in the coming hours. Installed in your EFB the application gets the weather forecast using IP or ACARS
communication and the avionic data as position and speed directly from the A429 bus. A pre-flight version is also available on
iPad so that you can directly review the weather condition along your flight directly from the airport or the hotel.
SITA eWAS system is formed basically by a terminal (connected EFB or iPad) and a ground segment that collects the weather
forecasts from several weather providers and optimizes all the information to reduce the data size to uplink to the aircraft.
o SIGMET Filtering: SIGMET data now has its own button in the Control panel, filtering it separately from the other
weather hazards.
o Spider tool improvements: The Spider tool has been improved by adding new filtering options such as the definition
of the circles by time or distance and the color of the spider legs according to the airport type. Airports with medical
services available now have an H icon on it to increase the situational awareness of pilots.
o New display filtering options: Display Filters introduces new filtering options on Tools and RoseGrid.
o Adequate ETOPs circles improvements: Improvement of the Adequate ETOPS circles visualization by introducing a
new display mode: Spider. This mode displays the circles of the airports according to Spider legs, increasing
situational awareness of flight crews by reducing the amount of circles drawn over the map and keeping the focus on
the nearest ones.

Control panel allows crew to access all supporting tools and options of SITA eWAS application. These options include:
When the width of SITA eWAS becomes too small, it will switch the graphical interface to one more adequate (which is the
same format as in the iPhone version).
In this case, the control panel is at the bottom of the app. The various options can be shown or hidden by dragging it up and
down. In this mode, the Flight Plan Manager is not available.
The Windows version does not have the concept of Split View as in iOS. But SITA eWAS windows version screen size can be
changed (using windows key or resizing it manually), allowing the user to work with multiple applications in the same view.
This tab allows to request a list of flights by introducing the airline (Only ICAO Code) or the departure airport (ICAO/IATA
code) or the destination airport (ICAO/IATA code) or any combination of three. Characters in lower case will be read as
upper case.
Note that the flights found with your ICAO/IATA code are
presented in a list, including its Flight Identifier, From (Airport),
To (Airport), and Standard Departure time.
3.1.3. Manual
This tab allows to request a flight plan by introducing manually the route. There are different options:
- Request a route using a valid Eurocontrol Flight Identifier.

The downloaded flight plan data details are shown automatically. Tap on accept button to activate the flight plan.
3.1.4. Latest
This tab presents a list of the latest flight plans downloaded. All
flights downloaded by previous features, Request Flight and
Request Route, are stored on a local database and are accessible
for further use, including the airports. This is very useful for
pilots, because they can download all their flights at the
beginning of the day when a good internet connection is
available. Because all the required data of a flight is stored locally,
pilots can activate it throughout the day, without having an
internet connection. A flight can be activated by tapping on the
desired flight.
The name appearing on the slider is the Flight Number, and when tapping on it the panel opens. The panel provides general
information about the flight: origin and destination airports, take-off date and time and the aircraft type. The ATC Flight Plan
Route is also provided and, by tapping on, it will be copied into the clipboard.
- Departure Time
- Taxi Time
- Flight Duration
When the Flight Duration parameter is modified, the increase/decrease is automatically applied to all the waypoints
of the flight plan. IMPORTANT: No A/C performance data is applied on these calculations.
- Average Cruise Flight Level
The Average Cruise FL is a pondered average of all the flat sections of the Flight Plan. When the Average Cruise FL is
modified, the increase/decrease is automatically applied to all sections. IMPORTANT: No A/C performance data is
applied on these calculations.
The changes can be saved or discarded. Changing the departure and taxi time might change the operational mode from
briefing to inflight or vice versa if any of those modes is active. Before saving the changes, the mode that will become active
appears below the resulting take-off time. More information on the operational modes in section 6.1.
Tapping on the button will enter the Flight Plan graphical edition.
This tool allows to edit the flight plan manually by moving, adding and deleting waypoints directly on the map.
To move a waypoint keep pressing on it and drag the waypoint on the screen.
Keep pressing on a line that links two waypoints will create a new waypoint between them.
Through the edit waypoint tool, the name, latitude and longitude of the waypoint can be modified.
The Direct to tool allows to create a direct path between two waypoints, removing all the waypoints between them.
Direct-From tool allows the user to trace a direct path between the current location of the aircraft to a waypoint, removing
all the waypoints between them.
To do so, select the destination waypoint, choose Direct-From icon in the contextual menu.
A new waypoint is automatically created at the aircraft position and the trajectory is shown.
Validate the action to proceed.
To leave the flight plan edition tap the cross to cancel changes or tap the check icon to save changes.

The SITA eWAS application offers two display modes selectable from the control menu:
“Briefing/Inflight” mode and “TimeView mode”.
The take-off time can be changed when in this mode via the Active Flight Plan panel. Please check 3.1.5 for further
information.
The SITA eWAS application provides the expected position of the aircraft for the selected daytime and shows the
corresponding weather conditions, in both displays. The timeline bar is integrated into the Vertical Display and allows the
crew to see which are the expected weather conditions during the flight according to the take-off time.
There is a play/pause button to automatically animate the ghost aircraft through the flight plan. After 30s in pause mode, the
timeline is automatically stopped and SITA eWAS application returns to the current time situation.
Task Checking the weather situation in advance considering the take-off and the estimation-time-over (ETO) at
each waypoint of the active flight plan.
Usage The remaining time until the take-off time is shown in orange in the timeline bar.
Taxi time is added to departure time in order to calculate the final take-off time.
Time marks indicates the time gap from take-off time.
Task Checking the current and future weather situation considering the current position of the
aircraft and the ETO at each waypoint of the active flight plan. Time marks indicates the
UTC Time.
Usage Aircraft position can be obtained from different sources, selectable on Profile Settings Dialog:
▪ GPS: GPS Integrated or external GPS device connected by Bluetooth,
▪ ADBP-834: Connection with an ADBP-834 compatible AID (selectable and configurable per airline),
▪ A350: Connection with the A350 AID (selectable and configurable by airline),
▪ Teledyne: Connection with the Teledyne AID (selectable and configurable by airline),
▪ SIMULATED: Position estimated by the internal FMS Simulator.
TRICK: The estimated position of the A/ C may be desynchro nized from the
current A/C position, in particular when loading the flight in manual mode where
the cruise speed is an average speed throughout the flight. In this case, the A/C
can be pointed on the fligh t plan by a lo ng tap (more than 3 seconds) on the
vertical profile. The plane is moved at the indicated location and resumes its
progress at the speed of the flight plan.
The calculation of the expected aircraft position (Ghost Aircraft) for a given time is performed by a simple FMS Simulator
integrated into SITA eWAS App. This FMS Simulator calculates the altitude and estimated-time-over at each waypoint. To do
that, it takes into account the cruise speed/altitude and any change on speed/altitude during the flight. But it does not take
into account either the wind direction/speed or the aircraft type dynamics.
Using the GPS Positioning in SITA eWAS is not currently allowed by the
authorities. Use it at your own discretion.
SITA eWAS is capable of retrieving GPS location from the device and place properly
the aircraft into the map and vertical display. To do this, GPS option must be selected
in the Settings Dialog. You will see in the top-left panel that the indicator: GPS
Enabled.
When the GPS positioning is working properly, there is no Aircraft icon displayed in
the map. Instead, there is a 20 NM circle in the area where the AC is. If the GPS is
active but no valid position is received or position is not refreshed in 5 seconds, the
yellow aircraft will appear and the left panel will indicate that the position is being
simulated. Once the signal is recovered, the yellow circle will appear again.
In this mode, the Left-side panel will not show any A/C Position related data to follow
EASA requirements.
SITA eWAS application can be configured to retrieve the A/C position directly from the avionics through a selectable AID.
Currently the following AIDs are supported:
- A350,
- Teledyne,
- Any ADBP-834 compatible AID (like FOMAX).
The list of AIDs and the connection settings can be configured from the server side depending on the airline and user profile.
Please contact SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk for more information.
When an AID is selected and a valid position is received, there is no Aircraft displayed in the map. Instead, there is a 20 NM
circle in the area where the AC is. If the AID connection is active but there is an error, no valid position is received or position
is not refreshed in 5 seconds, the yellow aircraft will appear, and the left panel will indicate which is the error and he position
is being simulated. Once the position is valid again, the yellow circle will appear again.
In this mode, the Left-side panel will not show any A/C Position related data to follow EASA requirements.
In the vertical view, the yellow AC will not be displayed if the GPS position indicates it is further than a 100 NM from the
active flight plan.
Task Checking current and future weather situation filtered by a specific UTC time, independently of
the active flight plan.
Usage The timeline bar is displayed on Map Display, clearly separated from the active flight plan.
No aircraft is displayed.
Ghost aircraft is neither displayed when a future UTC time is selected.
The Timeline bar range is always set to the next 16h.
The future UTC time can be selected by using tab and drag gestures on the timeline bar or by
setting a concrete time on UTC Time panel
Vertical Range
When Stations View is selected this causes the Vertical Display to be hidden automatically. Furthermore, this view is
exclusive, that is, no other weather phenomenon but stations information is displayed (Airports and FIRs).
This view has been specifically designed for pre-flight phases. A segmented tab allows the user to select between Airports or
FIRs view (which sit at the bottom of the screen).
The Airports view displays the minimum weather conditions for all airports inside a 50NM corridor along the route,
considering the TAF and METAR information and the usability period. The FIRs view displays the available NOTAMs from the
FIR on the AOI.
Important: For Airports, if the current time is inside the suitability period of an airport, the METAR is used for the
decoding. The TAF is used otherwise.
FIR background color depends on the availability of NOTAMs and its importance: blue if there are NOTAMs, orange if there
are NOTAMS and any of them is a high importance NOTAM and no background if there are no NOTAMs available. By clicking
on any highlighted FIR, the NOTAM panel is opened and the affected area is displayed on the map.
The airports which are downloaded manually by the pilot, using the Airports tool (Please refer to section 4 more details) are
considered as En-Route airports.
Those companies that have integrated in their solution an Airports Complex File (Please refer to section 19.4 for more
details) will also see:
Adequate airports,
which include airports from the Airport Sheet which are included in a configurable-width corridor (by
default, 400NM) around the flight plan, that are identify as adequate for landing. METAR/TAF and
NOTAM/SNOWTAM info is only downloaded by request.
Emergency airports,
which include airports from the Airport Sheet which are in a configurable-width corridor (by default,
400 NM) around the flight plan that can only be used for landing in case of emergency. METAR/TAF
and NOTAM/SNOWTAM info is only downloaded by request.
The color of the flower that surrounds the main icon indicates the type of airport (Regulatory / En-Route / Adequate /
Emergency airport)
According to the worst ceiling and visibility conditions calculated on the airport for the suitability time period, SITA eWAS
represents the airports with the following symbology:
IMPORTANT: The ceiling and visibility thresholds can be configured by airline within a csv file. The airline can define their
own default values and/or some specific values per airport.
If no threshol ds ar e defined by the airline, SITA eWAS System applies the following
default v alues:
Low visibility threshold = 550 m. Low ceiling threshold = 200 feet
High visibility threshold = 3000 m. High ceiling threshol d = 1000 feet
IMPORTANT: Winds and Gust can be configured by airline. Wind speed can be different to 35 KT, and gusts can be included
7.5. NOTAMs
The following icon can be added around the main airport icon to inform that there is a valid NOTAM that can affect the flight.

The wind component indicates whether it is headwind (H) or tail wind (T). If the point selected is on an airport, the airport
will be highlighted with a white circle. If the ghost aircraft is active, the calculation will be computed from it. The color of the
line indicates the AVG WC speed too following the same scheme as the winds.
This option is not available under Timeview Mode nor Stations View mode.
When in Inflight mode, the Equitime Point is calculated from the AC until the end of the route. When in Briefing mode, the
Equitime Point is always calculated in all the route. The points are selected by activating the mode and tapping on the map in
two different points. If the point selected is on an airport, the airport will be highlighted with a white circle.
In the case there are no winds available to calculate the equitime point (e.g: the selected point is outside the area of winds),
the equitime point is obtained without winds. This is indicated by displaying “NO AVG WC AVAIL” instead of the average wind
component.
This option is not available in Timeview Mode nor Stations View Mode.
13.4. Distances
This tool allows to calculate the distance between 2 points in NM. Simply press two points on the screen to be
pinned and the distance is calculated. You can draw up to 5 distances simultaneously. Tap on the distance label to

The two Vertical ranges can be switched automatically by performing a double tap on the
central blue square. Anyway, a different range of FLs can be selected by moving up/down the
sliders to the desired bottom (left slider) and top (right slider) values.
When a vertical range (different from ALL) is selected, the top and bottom values are clearly
indicated on the Vertical Display and the area is highlighted in clearer blue.
USE TRICK 1: Tapping twice on the left side of the vertical view will swap
between CRUISE and ALL filtering.
USE TRICK 2: The vertical range can also be controlled by displacing the labels
containing the FL values at the left side of the Vertical Display.
14.4.1. Tools
In this section you can activate and deactivate the different tools layers.
- Spider: When the Spider is on you can select the number of airports to show,
the information shown on the lable (Distance or Time) and the leg color
setting (Effective wind or type of airport)
Weather Data Status is represented by the color of cloud image, showing always the worst case scenario:
- Green All data is up to date.
- Orange At least one product is valid but not up to date.
- Red At least one product has expired or is invalid.
Refresh profile is represented by a sleeve in the icon next to the communication status. The different refresh profiles allow
controlling which set of weather products are to be automatically updated. This way, for low-bandwidth connectivity you can
get only the must volatile weather data.
- Airborne connectivity: All weather except Winds and Tropopause data will be updated
- Low connectivity: Only observations are updated using a reduced area of interest around the aircraft
position. This is equivalent to the ACARS connectivity profile.
- ACARS Connectivity: Only observations are updated using a reduced area of interest around the aircraft
position. Updates come via ACARS connectivity through the AID.
When a pilot taps on the cloud icon, the following panel is displayed:
This panel provides detailed information about Weather Data & Communication Status:

Through the Update Panel the crew can perform a Manual Update of all-weather products
The Auto-refresh switch allows to activate or deactivate automatic weather updates. When it is off, the Manual Update
needs to be tapped to get the most recent weather data. This switch can be hidden through the configuration. Please contact
The Refresh profile allows you to select the desired type of connectivity. The airline can customize which profiles should be
available for their users. Please contact us at the SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk to set it up as per your preference.
The ACARS connectivity refresh profile is only available for those customers that have SITA eWAS configured to
receive weather updates via ACARS (through AID connectivity). SITA eWAS will detect automatically whether the data
connectivity comes from ACARS or IP connectivity. When it detects that the connectivity is via ACARS, the profile cannot be
changed to a different one to avoid unexpected data consumption and ensure the application is configured for the ACARS
bandwidth. For more information please refer to section 20.2.
Please contact us at the SITA’s Enterprise Service Desk to configure updates via ACARS.
PIREP creator
Feedback Selector
Access to Legend
When entering on the PIREP creator menu, there are different parameters that can be set:
• Position: The position of the PIREP. In this case, the position is obtained from the current aircraft position according
to eWAS. If the position is wrong, put the correct position before entering the PIREP menu
• Altitude: The Flight Level of the PIREP. Automatically populated from eWAS, but can be modified.
• Obsv. Time: The observation time when the report happened
• Category: Select between the different PIREP categories. See section 18.3.4 for more information on the PIREPs
categories.
• Severity: The severity of the PIREP.
• A/C: The aircraft type. This is automatically obtained from the flight information and cannot be changed.
• Free Text: Any other information in text that the pilot wants to add on the PIREP.
Once the button Submit is tapped, the PIREP is submitted to the ground. PIREPs that have been submitted but are not yet
processed by the ground server are displayed with a translucid rectangle around it, to easily identify them. If there is no
connectivity, the PIREP will be automatically submitted once SITA eWAS regains connectivity. The validity of the PIREPs
generated in SITA eWAS is 3 hours.

16.4. Share
[*Only Available for iOS version]
Share View allows user to share a promotional image of SITA eWAS app using an external app: Mail, Whatsapp, Facebook,
Twitter…
16.5. Help
[*Only Available for iOS version]
Help View includes the pdf manual (PDF), which you can export with the Share button, and some demonstration videos. You
can also view the What’s New (iPad only), the version of the application and export logs feature.
The option “Weather Data Retrieving Area” allows selecting the area for which the weather is retrieved from the server.
There are three possible options:
Either Around FP or Custom area are indicated in the map by a dashed line and a label if any of both is active.
17.1. Introduction
The replay mode allows debriefing past flights with the weather available at the time of the flight within the last 90 days.
Currently, the replay mode only allows to review the forecast and observations data.
Airports and Winds will be added in future v ersions
to be replayed, tap on the OFP button and the flight data panel will
open. There you can input the following information:
• ATC Route: Standard ICAO Route or ATC Filing strip of the flight to be
reviewed
• Analysis time: select the time to start the simulation. Usually, this time
is set some time before the takeoff, to show the data available during
the briefing time.
• Takeoff time: the time at which the flight departed.
USE TRICK 1: If you want to analyze the data from a certain section of your
flight, you can put an analysis time later than the takeoff time. This way, it will
automatically place the flight at the estimated positio n depending on the takeoff
time.
• Play/Pause : This will start or stop the replay of the flight, simulating how time goes by. When it is paused, it will
display the weather that was available at the current time. This time can be seen on the top right information panel
• Replay speed: This allows to control how many seconds of the flight go by for every second in real time. Tapping on it
will change the replay speed. The available speeds are: 1x, 5x,10x,30x,60x and 90x.
By default, the replay is stopped when activating a new flight. This means that the weather that appears is the weather that
was available in eWAS at the Analysis Time (or at the time it is stopped). You can use the ghost aircraft to project the aircraft
as in the normal operational mode.
You can also access the Flight tab to change the cruise flight level and the
duration of your flight to make it as accurate as possible. The departure
and taxi time is calculated from the takeoff time. A default taxi time of 10
min is used for the purpose of the replays.

encountered by an aircraft in flight. This information is
usually relayed by radio to the nearest ground station. The SEVERE ICING SEVERE
message would then be encoded and relayed to other TURBULENCE
weather offices and air traffic service units.
PIREPs are represented at its corresponding FL. The FL is MODERATE MODERATE
displayed as a label just below the PIREP icon. PIREPs expire ICING TURBULENCE

TAFs are issued every six hours for major civil airfields: 00h, 06h,
12h, 18h UTC, and generally apply to a 24- or 36-hour period, and
an area within approximately five statute miles from the center of
an airport.
18.6.2. NOTAMs
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is a notice filed with an aviation authority
to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a
location that could affect the safety of the flight. NOTAMs are sorted
showing the latest NOTAM on top, first by year and then by higher to
lower NOTAM number.
18.6.3. SNOWTAMs
A SNOWTAM is as a special series NOTAM notifying the presence,
or removal, of hazardous conditions due to snow, ice, slush or
standing water associated with snow, slush and ice on the
movement area.
18.6.4. D-ATIS
The Automatic Terminal Information Service, or ATIS, is a
continuous broadcast of recorded aeronautical
information in busier terminal areas, i.e. airports and
their immediate surroundings. ATIS broadcasts contain
essential information, such as current weather
D-ATIS reports are generated once an hour or half-hour and are only available for the most important North America
airports.
For any airline, SITA eWAS app can extend previous functionalities using operational data. This operational data must
include:
- Airport Sheet: Table of adequate and emergency airports (classified by A/C type) that can be usable by the airline.
- Airport Minimum Criteria Sheet: Table of the default ceiling and visibility thresholds applied to all airport
METAR/TAF analysis. It is also possible to set specific values per airport.
- OFP Files: Operation Flight Plan files provided by the Flight Management System containing operational information
for each flight.
- Company Areas: Company Areas is a product that allows to share areas between Dispatchers and Pilots of the same
Airline. This product is only available for those airlines that has previously integrated SITA Mission Watch solution.
- SITA OptiFlight Messages: Only for those airlines that have integrated SITA-Optiflight.
The main idea behind mission bundles is for the user to upload their flights from the SITA eWAS cloud in advance (when
3G/4G/WiFi connection is available) and then retrieve them at any time from the SITA eWAS app, so the user won’t need to
input the flight plan manually. Nevertheless, the user can also retrieve a mission for a flight plan obtained from Eurocontrol,
which will get the flight plan according to Eurocontrol plus a default list of alternative airports customized for the given flight
plan and the forecasted weather for the time of the flight.
To request a mission you could either fill the Eurocontrol flight number in the Flight Number field and the departure date or,
mandatorily, the OFP Version of the Flight Plan, the Flight Plan number, the departure and destination airport in ICAO or IATA
format and the departure date.
If a mission has been successfully retrieved, the mission bundle is stored locally and the SITA eWAS app is started
automatically in Briefing Mode with all the information retrieved from the ground. When a mission bundle for a specific
mission has been stored locally, the SITA eWAS app is started automatically using the information available.
The flights found are presented in a list, including its Flight Identifier, From
(Airport), To (Airport) and Departure time. A flight can be selected by tapping
on the desired flight. The downloaded flight plan data details are shown
automatically. Tap on accept button to activate the flight plan. When activates
a Flight Plan, a list of Airports along this flight plan are downloaded
automatically.
The icon indicates when the departure time of a flight is prior to the current time.

In all these cases, the application is able to retrieve relevant aircraft and flight information directly from avionics buses,
including parameters like Longitude, Latitude, BaroAltitude, Ground Speed, True Heading, A/C Registration and/or ATC
Callsign.
The pilot can select the AID from the Profile Settings tab (Please refer to section 16.6.3). The list of AIDs and the connection
settings can be configured from the server side depending on the airline and user profile. Please contact SITA’s Enterprise
Service Desk if you are interested.
This ACARS/MIAM capacity was confirmed in March 2016 directly in an aircraft at the CDG air-shed and in SITAONAIR Labs
for different datalinks: VDL2, POA and Immarsat.

When a narrowband MIAM/ACARS connection (VDL/POA/Immarsat) is available, that is in-flight phase; the SITA
eWAS Application applies automatically a Low Profile with some advanced filtering features which reduces
drastically the payload size:
1. Only observation products are updated: Convection, Ice Crystal, Lightning Cells and PIREPs
3. The area and time of interest for refreshing weather data is reduced
Instead of covering a square around the flight plan, for any weather refresh during the flight, a smaller area of
interest is applied. This new area of interest is calculated taking into account the following parameters:
- Back point, ½ hour behind the current A/C position according to the active flight plan, or 320NM, if aircraft is not
yet ½ hour further from the origin airport.
- Front point, 2 hours ahead the current A/C position according to the active flight plan, or 960NM further from
the destination airport if time to arrival is less than 2 hours.
- Corridor width at back point is 320NM
- Corridor width at front point is 960NM

The SITA Ground Services never send packages which exceed the maximum payload size allowed. This
maximum size depends on the datalink used (VDL2, POA or Inmarsat) and has been calculated in order to
have acceptable response times (See table below).
To keep the observation data UP TO DATE with a minimum rate of 1 hour within the very restrictive area around the
Aircraft, an average of 32Kbits/hour are required.
In the cluster:
- One of the instances acts as a Master, requesting weather data and flight plans from SITA Ground Services
- The rest of instances act as Slaves, requesting weather data and active flight plan directly to the Master.
In summary, there is only one instance that is consuming data (3G / 4G / Satcom / ACARS) and then shares the updated
weather data with the rest of the instances.
