centimeter and protractor.
 It is ideal for drawing vertical lines,
horizontal lines, parallel lines, angles and
circles.

Protractor
 Used for measuring and laying off angle.

IT
 It is usually semi-circular in shape and made
of either metal or transparent plastic.
 Line joining 00-1800 is called the
base of the protractor.

wood or plastic.
 They are made invarious shapes,
Such as ellipse, hyperbola and
parabola (irregular shape)
 They are used for drawing curves
which cannot be drawn with a
compass.

 An Writing of titles, dimensions, notes and

other important particular on a drawing is

IT
called lettering.
 Lettering should be done properly in clear
and uniform style.
 Lettering technique: Horizontal line of
the letter are drawn from the left to right.
Vertical, inclined lines are drawn from top
to bottom.

1. Single stroke letter

 The word single stroke should not be taken

IT
to mean that the letter should be made in
one stroke without lifting the pencil
 The (BIS) Bureau of Indian Standard
recommends single stroke lettering for use
in Engg. Drawing.

Gothic letters:
 Stems of single-stroke letters, if given

more thickness, form that are known as
gothic letters.
 These are mostly used for main titles of
ink-drawings
Note:- The ratio of height to width varies but
in case of most of the letter is 6:5.

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)
Department of Mechanical Engineering

1.Out lines: Lines drawn to represent visible

edges and surface boundaries of objects are

IT
called outlines. These are continuous thick
lines. Visible Object - Thick

2.Dimension Lines - These are continuous

thin lines. They are terminated at the outer
ends by pointed arrowheads touching the
extension lines.
Hidden Line
Prepared By:-
Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)
Department of Mechanical Engineering

3.Extension Lines - solid thin lines showing

IT
point or line to which dimension applies.
They extend by about 3 mm beyond the
dimension lines.
4.Hidden or dotted line- Interior or hidden
edges and surfaces are shown by hidden
lines.
Prepared By:-
Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)

5.Section Lines :

IT
• These lines are drawn to make the section
evident.
• They are continuous thin lines and are
drawn generally at an angle of 45° to the
main outline of the section.
• They are uniformly spaced about 1 mm to
2 mm apart
Prepared By:-
Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)
Department of Mechanical Engineering

6.Construction lines : These lines are drawn

for constructing figures.

IT
They are continuous thin light lines
7.Leader or pointer lines: Leader line is
drawn to connect a note with the feature to
which it applies.
It is a continuous thin line

Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)
Department of Mechanical Engineering

8.Centre line: Centre lines are drawn to

IT
indicate the axes of cylindrical, conical
object and also show the centre of circles
and arcs.
9.Cutting-Plane and Viewing-Plane Lines-
Indicate location of cutting planes for
sectional views and the viewing position for
removed partial views
Prepared By:-
Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
B.Tech.(ME), M.Tech.(ME)
Department of Mechanical Engineering

10. Arrowhead :

IT
 An arrowhead is placed at each end of a
dimension line.
 Its pointed end touches an outline, an
extension line or a centre line.
 The size of an arrowhead should be
proportional to the thickness of the
outlines.
Prepared By:-
Er. Mithilesh Verma

Types of Line
