A. Preliminary Activities

Good morning class! Good morning, Ma’am!

May I ask a volunteer to lead us the prayer?

(Prayer)
Before we start with our new topic for today, please be
reminded of the following rules as we go on with our
topic.

 Mute your phone except when you have the

floor to talk.
 Raise your hand virtually for permission to speak.
 Stay in a study place where there are no
distractions as we go on with the lesson.

 DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

A. ENGAGE

Have you ever gone to a supermarket or grocery store?

Yes ma’am.
What did you observe inside the grocery or supermarket
in terms of arrangement of the different items?
They are arranged according to its
properties.
What else?
Products are properly labelled. Canned
goods into sets of corned beef,
meatloaf, sausages and etc.

Very Good! In relation to our subject chemistry, how

can we adopt this to elements? Ma’am it is seemingly compared to the
arrangement of periodic table of
elements
B. EXPLORE

Today, we will deal about the Arrangement of Periodic

Table of Elements and for our objectives in this lesson
are the following:
a. identify the groups and periods of the
elements;
b. explain how periodic table is organized;
c. identify features of groups of elements and
d. describe metals, non-metals, and metalloids

For your activity, I will group you into two. Group 1 will
be the boys and Group 2 will be the girls. I want you to
assign a secretary and one representative to present
your activity. You are only given allotted time of 5
minutes.

The activity is entitled “Let’s Organize the Periodic

Table”

EXPLAIN

Based from the activity, how are elements arranged in

the periodic table? The chemical elements are arranged in
order of increasing atomic number.

How many rows are there in the periodic table? Ma’am, there are seven rows.

What do we call a row of elements in periodic table? A row in the periodic table is called a
period.
What about the vertical column, what do we call this? Ma’am vertical columns are called
groups.
How many groups are there in the periodic table of
elements? There are eighteen groups, ma’am.

The periodic table can be divided into two sections we

have the Group 1 and 2, and the elements in Group 13-
18. Another section is the elements in Group 3-12.

What do we call the first eight groups or the Group 1

and 2, and the elements in Group 13-18? These eight groups are called
representative elements.
They are called as transition metals.
What about the elements in Group 3-12?

Let us discuss some features of groups or families of

elements. Elements from the vertical columns which are
the Groups 1, 2, and 13 through 18 are called
representative elements or main groups of the periodic
table.
Alkali Metals ma’am.
What is the specific name of the group 1 elements?

That’s right! The examples for alkali metals are the

lithium batteries used in cameras. Sodium chloride or
commonly known as table salt. Sodium and potassium
that are found in small quantities of bananas and
potatoes,

What are the characteristics of Alkali metals?

They are highly reactive metals, soft
malleable and ductile.
What else?
Good conductors of heat and
electricity.
How many valence electrons does the Group 1 have?
Ma’am, only one valence electron
Class, for neutral atoms the number of valence
electrons is equal to the atom's main group number.

Next door to the Alkali metals’ family are their Group 2

neighbours’, the Alkaline Metals.

Can you give some characteristics of Alkaline metals?

Group 2 elements are malleable,
ductile, and good conductors of heat
and electricity but not as soft as Group
Alkaline metals are the second most reactive elements. 1 elements.

How many valence electrons are there in Group 2?

Group 2 has with two valence
Group 2 elements are found in many things. Beryllium is electrons.
found in gems emerald and aquamarine. Magnesium is
found in the chlorophyll of green plants.

Let us proceed to the group 13 through 18. What can

you notice in elements Group 13-18?
The elements in Group 13-18 are not all
solid metals like the elements of Group
1 and 2.
Very good! In fact, a single group contain metals, non-
metals and metalloids and have members that are
solids, liquids and gases.

The Group 13 is also known as the Boron Family.

Are all elements in Group 13 metal? All are metals except for Boron and
Nihonium,
This family of elements is used to make variety of
products like cookware made with Boron. Aluminum is
used to make softdrink cans, baseball bats and etc.
Gallium is a soft solid metal, but its melting point is so low
that it will melt in your hand. It is used to make computer
chips.

Next is the Group 14, known as the Carbon Group. As

you can see, carbon is non-metal, Silicon and
Germanium are metalloids and tin and lead are metals.

What are the characteristics of this group? Elements in this family are the key
importance for semiconductor
technology with four valence electrons.

What do we mean by semiconductor? A semiconductor doesn’t conduct

electricity as well as a metal, but does
conduct electricity better than a non-
metal.
Another Group is the Group 15 which is the Nitrogen
Group.

Group 15 elements are also known as

pnictogens because in Greek pigeon means to cholk or
stifle. In the absence of the oxygen, molecular nitrogen
has this property. That's why group 15 elements are
known as either nitrogen family or pnictogens.

How many valence electrons are there in Nitrogen

Group? Five valence electrons.

Next is the Group 16 or also known the Oxygen family.

What is the new trivial name of Group 16 recognized by

the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry? Chalogens, ma’am.

The first member of Group 16 which is the Oxygen is said

to be essential for life, why? Oxygen helps organisms grow,
reproduce, and turn food into energy.

How is sulfur useful? Sulfur is used to manufacture sulfur acid.

It is used to manufacture paints,
fertilizers, detergents, synthetic fibers
and rubber.

Correct! Group 16 is generally non-metals and has 6

valence electrons.

Now, what do you notice in Group 17? All the elements in Group 17 are non-
metals except for Astatine which is a
metalloid.

What do you call the elements in Group 17? These elements are called halogens.

Group 17 are called halogens which mean “salt-

former” and they can exist in all three states of matter.

How many valence electrons are there in Group 17? 7 valence electrons, ma’am.

What is the last group of elements in the periodic table? Group 18 which are the Noble Gases

Why are noble gases stable? They are the most stable due to having
the maximum number of valence
electrons their outer shell can hold.

Therefore, they rarely react with other elements since

they are already stable.

What have you notice in Groups 3-12? All elements in group 3-12 are metals.

Groups 3-12 are called transition metals. Most transition

elements are found combined with other elements in
ores.

What are the features of Groups 3-12? Since all elements in group 3-12 are
metals, they are malleable, ductile, and
good conductors of electricity

Lanthanides and actinides

What are the two series of inner transition elements?

Lanthanides and actinides series are special series of

elements but are also part of the transition block.

The above figure shows the position of metals, non-

metals and metalloids. Metals are located on the left side of
the Periodic Table of Elements
Where can we find the metals?

Elements that are found far right of the periodic table

are called non-metals which may be solids, liquids or
gases.

A stair-step line on the table separates the metals from

non-metals. What do you call the elements along this
line? They are called metalloids.

Metalloids exhibit the properties of metals and non-

metals.
Name the seven elements commonly regarded as
metalloids. Silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony,
tellurium, and polonium.

The table shows the summary of properties of elements.

E. ELABORATE

To sum up our topic for today, let’s have a simple

activity entitled “FACT or BLUFF”. I will flash a statement
and you just have to identify whether the following
statements are FACT or BLUFF.
1. On the periodic table, there are families which are 1. FACT
groups of elements with similar properties.
2. Periods are the vertical rows of the periodic table 2. BLUFF
3. There are 18 Groups in the Periodic table. 3. FACT
4. The alkali metals consist of all of the elements in 4. FACT
group one with the exception of hydrogen
5. BLUFF
5. Group 2 is named as halogens.
6. FACT
6. Halogens are “salt-formers”
7. FACT
7. Groups 1, 2, 13-18 are called as representative
elements. 8. BLUFF
8. The lanthanides and actinides are special series of
elements they are called outer transition elements.
9. Metals are not good conductor of heat. 9. BLUFF
10. There are only two classifications of elements namely 10. BLUFF
metals and non-metals.
