Type of River based on the water source

1) what is – permanent river ? give one of the example of this river in Indonesia !

= A permanent river is a river that flows continuously throughout the year, as opposed to seasonal or
intermittent rivers that may dry up during certain times. One example of a permanent river in
Indonesia is the Kapuas River. The Kapuas River is the longest river in Indonesia, flowing on the
island of Borneo. It has a length of approximately 1,143 kilometers and is a vital waterway for
transportation and commerce in the region.

Is – periodic river ?

=A periodic river is a river that does not flow continuously throughout the year and may experience
seasonal changes in water flow. In Indonesia, one example of a periodic river is the Citarum River.
The Citarum River is located on the island of Java and is known for its seasonal variations in flow.
During the dry season, the water levels in the Citarum River may decrease, and in the rainy season,
the river can experience increased water flow. The Citarum River is one of the largest and most
important rivers in Java, playing a significant role in the region's agriculture and water supply.

2) what is – continental shelf ?

= The continental shelf is the extended, gently sloping portion of a continent that is submerged
beneath the shallow waters bordering the continent. It typically extends from the shoreline to the point
where the slope descends more steeply, known as the shelf break. The continental shelf is an
important part of the ocean floor and is rich in marine life. It varies in width, with some shelves being
quite broad.

Is – continental slope ?

= The continental slope is the steep slope that descends from the outer edge of the continental shelf to
the ocean floor. It marks the boundary between the continental crust and the oceanic crust. The slope
is often characterized by a significant change in depth, and it is a transition zone between the
continental shelf and the deep ocean floor.

Is – sea volcano ?

= A sea volcano, also known as a submarine volcano or underwater volcano, is a volcano located
beneath the ocean's surface. These volcanoes can erupt, creating underwater volcanic features such
as seamounts or volcanic islands. They play a crucial role in the geology and shaping of the ocean
floor.

Is – mid-ocean ridge ?

= A mid-ocean ridge is a continuous mountainous underwater ridge that winds through the Earth's
oceans. It is a divergent or constructive plate boundary where tectonic plates are moving away from
each other, allowing magma to rise from the mantle and solidify, creating new oceanic crust. The Mid-
Atlantic Ridge is one well-known example of a mid-ocean ridge.
Is – trench ?

= A trench is a deep, narrow depression in the ocean floor. Trenches are often associated with
subduction zones, where one tectonic plate is being forced beneath another. The Mariana Trench is the
deepest known trench and is located in the western Pacific Ocean. Trenches are some of the deepest
parts of the Earth's oceans.

3) why we can only find coral reef in certain area in the ocean ? and where is it ?

=Coral reefs are found in tropical and subtropical waters (30°N to 30°S latitudes) due to their
preference for warm temperatures (20-29°C), clear and shallow waters for sunlight, and stable salinity
levels (32-42 parts per thousand). Key regions with coral reefs include the Indo-Pacific (Coral
Triangle, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines) and the Caribbean (Belize, Bahamas, Florida Keys). Coral
reefs are threatened by climate change, coral bleaching, overfishing, pollution, and coastal
development.

4) how is the process of high and low tide ? what cause low and high tide ?

= Tides are caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun. The Moon's gravity creates a
bulge in the ocean on the side facing it and another bulge on the opposite side due to Earth's rotation.
The Sun also contributes, causing higher high tides and lower low tides during spring tides (full and
new moons) and vice versa during neap tides (first and third quarters of the Moon). Earth's rotation
results in two high tides and two low tides approximately every 24 hours.

5) what is great ocean conveyer belt and why this movement happen ?

= The Great Ocean Conveyor Belt, or thermohaline circulation, is a system of ocean currents driven
by temperature and salinity differences. Warm surface currents move toward the poles, cool, and sink,
forming deep-water currents. This circulation redistributes heat globally, influencing climate and
weather patterns. It is essential for maintaining Earth's climate balance.

6) what is mangrove ? what are all the function of this in ecosystem ?

=Mangroves: Coastal trees that protect shorelines, provide habitat for marine life, filter water, store
carbon, support fisheries, offer economic benefits, and aid in adapting to sea level rise. Conservation
is essential due to threats like habitat destruction and climate change.

7) how bmkg and bnpb use the data of hydrology ? explain your answer !

= BMKG uses hydrological data for flood forecasting, monitoring river conditions, and issuing early
warnings. BNPB utilizes this data for disaster response, assessing flood impacts, and planning
resilient infrastructure. Both agencies prioritize public safety and risk reduction based on hydrological
information.
