Introduction
Sexuality can play an important role in one’s identity and sense of self. The
primary aim of gender and human sexuality education is to become more comfortable
with your sexuality as a teenager, and to promote wholesome family and healthy
interpersonal relationship. Hence, learning human sexuality helps you to validate
your gender identity and dispel your doubts and anxieties.

This learning activity sheet contains two learning outcomes:


- Discusses basic terms in sexuality as an important component of one’s
personality (H8FH-Ia-16-17)
- Explains the dimensions of human sexuality (H8FH-Ia-18)

After going through this lesson, you are expected to:


1 demonstrate understanding of human sexuality’s basic terms
2 identify basic terms in sexuality (sex, sexuality, gender, etc.)
3 discuss the dimensions of human sexuality and managing sexuality related

Lesson
Gender and Human Sexuality

Sex is a major aspect of personality. It is closely related to emotional and social


development and can be best understood by connecting it to the total adjustment of
the individual in the family and society. The process of sexual development begins
from birth to adulthood, thus, it is a continuous developmental process throughout
life.

Sex is a label assigned at birth based on the reproductive organs you’re born with.
It is the biological basis of being male or female.

Gender is a social concept on how men and women should think, feel, and act. It
refers to femininity or masculinity of a person’s role and behavior.
 Gender Identity – this term used to describe who you feel you are – whether
you think or feel you are male or female or something in between.
 Gender Expression – how you show who you are through clothing, hair,
activities and behavior.
 Gender Equality – permits man and woman equal enjoyment of human
rights.

 Gender Role – refers to set of roles, characteristics, and expectations of
how a man or a woman should feel, think, and act as influenced by
parents, peers or society. Below are some examples of gender roles:

Sexuality is an integral part of what we do and who we are; it is the way in which
we experience and express ourselves as sexual beings. It is the total expression of an
individual’s self-concept. Sexuality refers to your attitudes and behavior toward
yourself.

Sexuality is best understood through the help of the people around you. Sexuality

The way you see yourself is influenced by many people. It is important to maintain
good relationships with others.

Learning human sexuality is important because of the following:
1. It teaches you that giving and receiving love is a human need.
2. It helps you appreciate your sexual identity.
3. It makes you respect your own and other person’s body.
4. It makes you experience body changes and learn how to properly manage
these changes.
5. It helps you appreciate how life began.
6. It provides you with information on how to be disease-free and how live a
healthy lifestyle.

Dimensions of Human Sexuality

Human sexuality is the quality of being male or female. It is the way in which
we experience and express ourselves as sexual beings. Sexuality involves the
physical, mental, social, emotional, and ethical dimensions of one’s personality.

Sexuality refers to your total self.

Healthy sexuality means taking high sense of responsibility for all your actions
